QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA (Nov 26, 2024) – GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) has announced a new contract with Powerlink, the government-owned transmission utility of Queensland, to supply critical grid equipment for their upcoming Capital Work program. The agreement includes the provision of 69 Dead Tank Circuit Breakers (DTCBs), each rated at 245 kV or higher, designed to enhance the resilience of Queensland’s energy grid and support the state’s ambitious renewable energy goals.

Powerlink plays a pivotal role in Queensland’s energy landscape, managing the high-voltage transmission network and connecting renewable energy sources across the region. With renewable energy targets of 70% by 2032 and 80% by 2035, Powerlink’s efforts are crucial to integrating sustainable energy sources while fostering economic growth and environmental sustainability.

Advanced Dead Tank Circuit Breakers: Enhancing Grid Stability

Dead Tank Circuit Breakers (DTCBs) are essential for maintaining reliable power transmission. They safeguard the grid from electrical faults, ensuring uninterrupted energy flow and minimizing disruptions. Acting as robust “off switches,” they isolate affected network sections during faults or overloads, thereby protecting the grid from potential damage.

Such technology is particularly vital for integrating renewable energy sources, which can pose challenges due to intermittent generation. Reliable transmission equipment like DTCBs ensures renewable energy reaches consumers without compromising grid stability, making them indispensable for energy transition projects.

GE Vernova’s DTCBs are globally recognized for their reliability and scalability. With approximately 100,000 units installed worldwide, the company’s Grid Solutions division has earned a strong reputation for delivering cutting-edge circuit breakers that enable the seamless adoption of renewable energy and enhance energy security.

The 69 DTCBs for Powerlink will be manufactured at GE Vernova’s facility in Suzhou, China, and are scheduled for delivery between August 2025 and March 2026. This global production approach ensures timely delivery for complex, large-scale projects.

This contract builds upon GE Vernova’s successful collaboration with Powerlink, which includes localizing DTCB production at the Suzhou facility. This initiative has reduced lead times and mitigated global supply chain challenges for critical grid equipment.

At the official signing ceremony, Paul Simshauser, CEO of Powerlink, and Yeow Keong Lim, Asia Pacific Regional Leader for GE Vernova’s Power Transmission division, emphasized the importance of this partnership.
