  • Initiative set to reinforce the power grid and meet rising electricity needs in England and Wales
  • New high-voltage infrastructure to enable greater integration of renewable energy and boost grid reliability
  • GE Vernova to supply advanced transmission solutions in partnership with Laing O’Rourke for National Grid

LONDON, United Kingdom, (27 August) – GE Vernova (NYSE: GEV) has been selected by Laing O’Rourke to provide a new 400 kV Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substation in Chesterfield, a key component of National Grid’s Brinsworth to Chesterfield and Chesterfield to High Marnham initiatives. This upgrade will expand transmission capacity, support increasing power demand, ensure a stable energy supply, and facilitate the connection of more domestically produced renewable energy sources.

GIS technology allows for the safe and efficient transfer of large volumes of electricity within modern high-voltage transmission systems. This investment supports broader network enhancements across Derbyshire, South Yorkshire, and Nottinghamshire, ensuring future-ready grid infrastructure.

“The pace of the energy transition hinges on the strength of the underlying grid infrastructure,” stated Johan Bindele, CEO of Grid Systems Integration at GE Vernova. “The Chesterfield project is about delivering the transmission capacity essential for moving greater volumes of electricity, enhancing system resilience, and enabling sustainable economic development. We’re proud to combine our technological expertise and project execution capabilities with Laing O’Rourke and National Grid to advance this vital infrastructure.”

“The Chesterfield initiative plays a crucial role in modernizing the UK’s electricity transmission system for future demands,” noted Adam Rawling, Enterprise Partner Director at Laing O’Rourke. “By collaborating with GE Vernova, we are helping deliver the infrastructure necessary to expand network capacity, enhance reliability, and support the UK’s shift toward a more electrified and sustainable energy landscape.”

This project is part of The Great Grid Upgrade, the most extensive transformation of the UK’s electricity network in decades. Through major transmission upgrades across England and Wales, the initiative is enabling the integration of clean, secure, and locally sourced energy into homes and businesses. As electricity consumption continues to rise, the new substation will ensure power is transported safely and efficiently across the grid.

The project will incorporate GE Vernova’s SF₆-free g³ GIS technology, part of the GRiDEATM portfolio—a suite of solutions designed to decarbonize the power grid. This innovative technology offers a sustainable alternative to sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆) while delivering equivalent performance, safety, and reliability standards required for modern transmission networks.

GE Vernova’s responsibilities include engineering design, procurement, equipment delivery, on-site installation, testing, and commissioning. The company will also deliver primary and secondary engineering services, protection and control systems, interface coordination, integration with the existing grid infrastructure, and decommissioning of legacy equipment.

For decades, GE Vernova has provided high-voltage substations and transmission solutions to power utilities worldwide. Its technologies empower customers to strengthen grid performance, improve system reliability, and accelerate the shift toward secure, resilient, and sustainable energy networks.
