  • GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions has introduced an innovative addition to its rebranded FACTSFLEX STATCOM portfolio: the FACTSFLEX GFMe.
  • The FACTSFLEX GFMe merges STATCOM technology with supercapacitor energy storage, enhancing the reliability and stability of electrical grids during voltage and frequency fluctuations by providing virtual inertia and grid-forming controls. This is particularly beneficial in regions with less robust infrastructure or higher levels of renewable energy integration.
  • Available worldwide, the FACTSFLEX GFMe is designed to facilitate the global shift toward cleaner energy, ensuring stable and efficient grid operations.

Paris, France (Aug 28, 2024) – GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) today announced the launch of its latest advancement, the FACTSFLEX GFMe, a cutting-edge Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System (FACTS) solution focused on reinforcing power grids and promoting the increased adoption of renewable energy sources.

The FACTSFLEX GFMe integrates GE Vernova’s STATCOM technology with sophisticated supercapacitors to more effectively stabilize the grid by enabling active power through energy storage. This innovative combination allows for swift responses to grid disturbances, which is crucial in areas with weaker infrastructure or significant renewable energy inputs. By enhancing grid stability, the FACTSFLEX GFMe ensures reliable power system operations and supports the global transition to cleaner energy. The solution is now available globally.

“Our grid is undergoing its most significant transformation in over a century, driven by the rise of renewable energy sources like solar and wind,” stated Johan Bindele, Leader of Grid Systems Integration at GE Vernova. “This transformation brings new challenges, particularly the intermittent nature of renewables, which can lead to voltage fluctuations and grid instability. With FACTSFLEX GFMe, we are introducing a solution that leverages supercapacitor technology alongside our STATCOM systems to re-create the inertia that is being lost due to the phasing out of traditional thermal power generation, ensuring stable and reliable grid operations as we transition to a cleaner energy future.”

Understanding FACTSFLEX GFMe

In addition to its reactive power compensation capabilities, the FACTSFLEX GFMe utilizes supercapacitor-based energy storage to replicate inertia by injecting or absorbing active power. This feature provides grid operators with advanced options for automatic and immediate support of grid stability. The system employs a double star configuration, allowing for seamless integration of high voltage energy storage. This modular and scalable solution can be tailored to meet the diverse requirements of various projects.

Compared to battery-based alternatives, the FACTSFLEX GFMe delivers superior voltage and active power performance. Active power is scalable, typically rated at 150 MW for several seconds, while reactive power capabilities can be customized to meet customer specifications, usually around 300 Mvar in continuous ratings.

In addition to the FACTSFLEX GFMe, GE Vernova’s recently rebranded STATCOM portfolio, now known as FACTSFLEX STATCOM, includes FACTSFLEX Classic, GE Vernova’s original STATCOM solution with a robust and proven installation base, as well as FACTSFLEX GFM, a grid-forming STATCOM that delivers instantaneous natural reactive power injection for grid disturbances, enhancing grid stability.
