Paris, FRANCE — September 19th, 2023 — To address the complexities of the energy transition, German transmission system operator Amprion GmbH has placed an order with GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions business for twelve 400 kV power transformers. These transformers will play a critical role in reinforcing the electrical grid that supplies power to 29 million people under Amprion’s coverage.

The power transformers, totaling over 5,000 MVA, will be manufactured at GE Vernova’s grid facility in Mönchengladbach, western Germany. They are scheduled for delivery between 2025 and 2027, and will be installed at nine substations across Amprion’s extensive grid, which spans from Lower Saxony to the Alps.

“As utilities transition to renewable energy, transmission grid operators face increasing demands and complexities. Modern transmission systems are required to handle bulk power in ways that were not initially anticipated,” said Philippe Piron, President and CEO of GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions business. “We are proud to support Amprion, a valued long-term customer, in strengthening their 400 kV electrical grid. Our advanced transformers will enhance their capacity and grid stability.”

These transformers are essential components of the electrical grid, regulating the flow of electricity from generation plants through transmission and distribution lines to homes and businesses. By replacing transformers from the 1970s with GE Vernova’s state-of-the-art technology, Amprion will be better equipped to integrate more renewable energy into their network.

Since 2003, Amprion has been purchasing GE Vernova’s transformers, switchgear, gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), mechanically switched capacitors with damping network (MSCDN), and related services. This ongoing partnership underscores the reliability and performance of GE Vernova’s products.
