GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy and AFRY partner on BWRX-300 small modular reactor deployment

STOCKHOLM (April 7, 2026) – GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GVH) announced today that it has signed a Main Services Agreement (MSA) with AFRY, a prominent Swedish firm specializing in engineering, project management, and advisory services, to support the rollout of its BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR) technology.

Under this non-exclusive partnership, AFRY will provide engineering and consulting services, drawing on its strong industry expertise, regional knowledge, and extensive European footprint. The collaboration is expected to create opportunities for Swedish industries to engage in high-value projects tied to the expanding SMR market in Europe and globally.

By integrating GVH’s established BWRX-300 technology and international project experience with AFRY’s engineering capabilities, the partnership is structured to enable efficient, repeatable, and scalable deployment across multiple European projects. Beyond engineering services, AFRY will also assist GVH in preparing a license application for the BWRX-300 to the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM).

Global momentum for the BWRX-300 continues to grow. Construction of the first unit is underway at Ontario Power Generation’s Darlington site in Canada, with completion expected before the end of the decade, making it the first SMR in the Western world. Major components, including the reactor pressure vessel, are already in production, while site development is progressing as planned. In the United States, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has accepted and is reviewing the Tennessee Valley Authority’s application to build the first BWRX-300 at its Clinch River site in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. These and other developments highlight GVH’s progress and leadership in scaling SMR technology for commercial deployment worldwide.
