Pittsburgh, U.S., and Mississauga, Canada: November 21, 2023 – GE Vernova’s Power Conversion division and Next Hydrogen Solutions Inc. have signed a memorandum of understanding to combine Next Hydrogen’s electrolysis technology with GE Vernova’s power systems to generate green hydrogen.

Electrolysis Technology for Green Hydrogen Production

Electrolysis involves splitting water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity. Green hydrogen, produced via this process, emits little to no greenhouse gases and is vital for eFuels and ammonia production. GE Vernova’s integration will provide Next Hydrogen’s electrolyzers with direct current (DC) power from renewable sources such as solar, wind, and hydro. GE Vernova will also supply power quality solutions, including synchronous condensers, energy storage, motors, drives for compression and water, and controls with Energy Management Systems (EMS).

Leadership Statements

Raveel Afzaal, President and CEO of Next Hydrogen, stated, “Partnering with GE Vernova allows us to leverage their extensive market channels and proven project execution capabilities. This collaboration is pivotal to our mission of developing green hydrogen technologies and supporting global energy sustainability.”

Rodrigo Elias, General Manager North America for GE Vernova’s Power Conversion division, added, “We are committed to advancing the hydrogen revolution and decarbonizing sectors like industrial gas, power, marine, and O&G industries by delivering turnkey systems integrating Next Hydrogen electrolyzers.”

Project Phases and Future Plans

In the initial phase, GE Vernova and Next Hydrogen will develop advanced power systems for the next generation of electrolyzers, set to debut in 2024. This phase includes installation, testing, and integration of a Next Hydrogen electrolyzer with a power supply designed by GE Vernova.

Subsequent phases will involve market demonstrations and deployments, setting the stage for large-scale commercial green hydrogen projects.
