OPG’s decades of experience and solid track record in delivering on-time, on-budget nuclear refurbishments, combined with GEH’s nuclear expertise, sets the stage for success in advancing the energy landscape in other regions.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — As a part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Investing in America agenda, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded contracts to six companies to help build a domestic supply chain for fuels used in advanced nuclear reactors. Many of these reactors will depend on high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) to achieve more compact designs, longer operating cycles, and improved efficiencies compared to current technologies. These contracts will enable the selected companies to bid for work related to deconversion services, an essential element of the HALEU supply chain. HALEU deconversion plays a vital role in the fuel supply chain for advanced nuclear reactors. HALEU refers to uranium enriched between 5 and 20 percent, increasing the amount of fissile material to make the fuel more efficient. After enrichment—performed in gaseous uranium hexafluoride form—the material must be deconverted to either oxide or metal forms, which are then fabricated into fuel for advanced reactors.
Nuclear power is the largest source of carbon-free energy in the U.S., providing reliable, firm, and safe electricity. Advanced nuclear technologies using HALEU fuels represent a crucial suite of innovations that will help the U.S. achieve its emissions targets and support America’s recent commitment, along with 24 other countries, to triple global nuclear power by 2050. Currently, the U.S. lacks commercial HALEU enrichment and deconversion services to support the deployment of advanced reactors, which are vital for meeting President Biden and Vice President Harris’s climate and greenhouse gas reduction goals. Six companies have been awarded contracts, fostering strong competition and enabling the DOE to choose the best candidates for future work. Contract Overview
The scope of the contract, booked in Q2 2024, includes the design, manufacturing, delivery, and installation of two independent PLS units at a U.S. Navy facility over the next three years. The program, overseen by the Naval Surface Warfare Center Philadelphia Division (NSWCPD), will serve as the primary testing and qualification site for propulsion systems of next-generation naval vessels like the FFG-62 and DDG(X). This SMR competition is a crucial component of the UK government’s strategy to revive nuclear energy and establish the country as a leader in the global race to develop state-of-the-art nuclear technologies. The shortlist has been narrowed down to four contenders, with the next phase offering successful companies the chance to secure government contracts.
GEH’s 10th-generation SMR design, the BWRX₋300, builds upon decades of practical operational experience and innovation. It utilizes a standardized design, a proven delivery model, and GEH’s expertise in international regulatory cooperation. In collaboration with Ontario Power Generation (OPG), GEH is working on the first BWRX₋300 at OPG’s Darlington site near Toronto. GREENVILLE, USA (September 26, 2024) — Today, GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) announced that the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO) has selected the company to lead a project aimed at facilitating permitting and ensuring safety in hydrogen deployments. The primary goal is to address challenges related to siting, permitting, and installation, covering the entire hydrogen value chain, from production to end-use applications. The “H₂Net” project, led by GE Vernova, brings together Clemson University and Roper Mountain Science Center, based in Greenville, SC. GE Vernova is entering negotiations with the DOE for a $1 million federal funding agreement to define the project’s scope and terms.
As part of the H₂Net program, the team will develop an AI-based tool, named HySAGE (Hydrogen Smart Assistant for Governance Execution), which will be specially trained to handle critical documents for safe H₂ operations and regulatory approvals. This expansion is driven by the increasing demand for High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission systems, which are crucial for powering renewable energy projects across Europe, Asia, and North America, while also facilitating the UK’s energy transition.
The expansion will focus on two key locations of its Electrification Systems’ Grid Solutions division in Stafford:
Stafford HVDC Facility at Redhill – HVDC and Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) valves: This facility is expected to double its valve manufacturing capacity by installing an additional Voltage-Sourced Converter (VSC) valve assembly line. These valves, which are regarded as the “heart” of an HVDC converter station, enable efficient power transmission from offshore wind farms and other renewable energy sources to the grid.
Stafford Transformer Facility at Lichfield Rd – HVDC converter transformers: Significant upgrades will take place at this site to increase capacity and improve the production of HVDC converter transformers, essential for integrating renewable energy into the grid. Transformers manufactured here have recently been deployed in the North Sea to support the 1.4 GW Sofia Offshore Wind Farm.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (September 16, 2024) – GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) has been awarded a contract by Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners (Quinbrook) to act as the integration provider for the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the second phase of the Supernode project. This phase includes a 250 MW/1,000 MWh storage system, located in Queensland, Australia.
The Supernode project, spearheaded by Quinbrook, aims to establish a large-scale BESS and data center facility in Queensland. Once fully realized, the site will host a 750 MW BESS with a 2–4 hour capacity, positioning it as one of the most significant battery storage systems in the Australian energy market. The 250 MW/1,000 MWh storage system currently under development represents the second phase of the three-stage Supernode project. Earlier this year, GE Vernova also secured the contract for Stage 1, which involves integrating a 250 MW/500 MWh BESS that is now in progress.

LONDON (September 9, 2024) – GE Vernova’s nuclear energy division, GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH), has solidified multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Aecon, AtkinsRéalis, Jacobs, and Laing O’Rourke to enhance the development and deployment of its Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology in the United Kingdom.
These agreements represent a significant milestone in GEH’s pursuit of introducing its BWRX-300 SMR technology to the UK, aligning with its progress in the ongoing competition hosted by Great British Nuclear (GBN) for SMR deployment.
Aecon, responsible for construction services, project management, and execution for the Darlington New Nuclear Project in Canada, is among the partners. AtkinsRéalis, which serves as the project’s architect and engineer, is also part of the collaboration. With construction at Darlington scheduled to commence in 2025 and commercial operations targeted for 2029, these MoUs allow GEH to apply insights from the Canadian project to expedite progress in the UK.
Additionally, Jacobs will provide top-tier design expertise customized for the UK market, while UK-based Laing O’Rourke will offer its deep knowledge of modern construction techniques to support the program’s development.
These partnerships build upon GEH’s earlier collaboration with Sheffield Forgemasters, aimed at exploring how the company’s forgings can contribute to the deployment of the BWRX-300 in the UK.

Paris, FRANCE – August 29, 2024 – GE Vernova today announced that its Grid Solutions unit will manufacture, deliver, and commission the world’s first 245-kilovolt (kV) SF6-free gas-insulated substation (GIS) for RTE in France. This project will utilize the advanced B105 SF6-free GIS, enabling RTE to replace sulfur hexafluoride (SF6)—a gas with a global warming potential 24,300 times greater than CO2—with the g3 alternative. The g3 technology offers about a 99% reduction in CO2-equivalent emissions compared to SF6.
This initiative is part of RTE’s efforts to lower the carbon footprint of its transmission infrastructure by adopting SF6 alternatives while supporting the energy transition through the integration of low-carbon energy. One 245 kV SF6-free B105 GIS unit will prevent the release of approximately 20,000 tons of CO2 equivalent into the high-voltage grid. The substation will also incorporate Grid Solutions’ SF6-free F35g 145 kV, which has already proven reliable with six years of operational experience.
The 245 kV B105 Dual Gas GIS, co-funded by the EU’s LIFE Program, is a product of research by GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions business under the LIFE21 project named LIFE SF6-free GIS. This three-and-a-half-year research initiative aimed to create a 245 kV substation that is SF6-free and can operate with both SF6 and g3 gases. The substation is designed to support networks up to 245 kV for onshore and offshore power generation and transmission, as well as for energy-intensive industrial applications.
GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions introduced the B105g GIS as part of its new GRiDEA decarbonization product line, launched at the CIGRE 2024 conference in Paris. The g3 technology offers a sustainable alternative to SF6, an insulating and switching gas that has been a standard in high-voltage substation equipment for decades. Identified as a potent greenhouse gas by the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, SF6 contributes to global warming at a rate 24,300 times that of CO2 and can persist in the atmosphere for up to 1,000 years.

GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions g3 products deliver the same high performance and reliability as SF6-based equipment but with a dramatically reduced environmental impact over their operational lifetime. Life-cycle assessments (LCAs), conducted in accordance with international ISO 14040/14044 standards, confirm that these products have a lower carbon footprint over a 40-year substation life cycle compared to SF6 products. This reduced impact is achieved through a 99% decrease in the gas’s global warming potential compared to SF6. Furthermore, since these SF6-free switchgear maintain the same compact dimensions as SF6 equipment, they do not require additional raw materials, thus avoiding any increase in manufacturing emissions.
The 245 kV B105 Dual Gas substation is one of several SF6-free substation projects that RTE is implementing, ranging from 145 kV to 400 kV. Following the success of the Grimaud substation, RTE has commissioned the construction of multiple F35g 145 kV g3-gas insulated substations, T155g 420 kV GIS, and GL312g 145 kV live tank circuit-breakers for its air-insulated substations.
These SF6-free products will be developed and manufactured in France.

The collaboration with TenneT TSO GmbH, 50Hertz Transmission GmbH, Amprion GmbH, and Transnet BW GmbH focuses on the design and development of a Multi-Terminal/Multi-Hub High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) solution. This partnership represents a significant early achievement in creating a future-ready high-voltage grid, crucial for Germany and Europe’s energy transition.

(NYSE: GEV) has announced a major contract win from Sonelgaz via their joint venture, GE Algeria Turbines (GEAT), to advance Algeria’s grid infrastructure. The order, booked in Q2 2024, entails the delivery of high-voltage (HV) equipment, components, and grid automation solutions for 134 substations by 2028. GEAT will incorporate this technology at its Ain Yagout facility in Batna, Algeria, specifically for Sonelgaz’s projects.

SEJONG, SOUTH KOREA (July 15, 2024) – GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) announced today the successful commissioning of Korea Southern Power Co, Ltd. (KOSPO)’s Shinsejong Combined Cycle Power Plant in Sejong Multifunctional Administrative City. This milestone marks the 100th HA gas turbine commissioned by GE Vernova globally and the first 7HA.03 gas turbine installation in South Korea.
GE Vernova’s HA gas turbines, the fastest-growing fleet in the H-Class segment, have accumulated over 2.5 million commercial operating hours, with an installed capacity exceeding 53 gigawatts. This capacity is equivalent to powering nearly 40 million American homes.
Eric Gray, CEO of GE Vernova’s Gas Power business, stated, “The demand for electricity is increasing, and highly efficient HA gas power plants are crucial for balancing energy transition commitments with reliable electricity supply. These plants support the transition from coal to gas and provide stability to the grid by balancing the variable nature of renewables.”
The installation of HA gas turbines offers long-term benefits through potential maintenance and upgrade contracts. Each HA unit can save over 3.3 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions per year compared to an average coal-fired plant, equivalent to removing 680,000 cars from the road.
GE Vernova’s DLN 2.6e combustion system, installed in the 7HA.03 gas turbines at Shinsejong, enhances efficiency and reduces emissions. This advanced technology allows power generation with lower NOx emissions, contributing to South Korea’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.
The Shinsejong plant will supply power to the Korea Power Exchange and provide district heating to Sejong City, meeting the growing demand for heat, air conditioning, and electricity with increased efficiency.

In April, GE Vernova celebrated the production of its 2000th gas turbine at its Belfort, France site, and recently completed the first HA turbine in Saudi Arabia at the GE Saudi Advanced Turbines facility.
