New Mexico’s Wind Power Revolution: SunZia Project Featuring GE Vernova’s 3.6-154 Turbines

Meeting the increasing demand for renewable electricity in large urban areas is a growing challenge in the U.S., but a promising solution is underway in central New Mexico. Near the small town of Corona, GE Vernova is set to install 674 of its innovative 3.6-154 wind turbines as part of the SunZia project, developed by Pattern Energy. Scheduled for completion in 2026, this monumental project will boast a capacity of 3,500 MW, making it the largest wind farm and renewable energy project in the Western Hemisphere, capable of powering approximately 3 million homes.

SunZia spans over a million acres, drawing comparisons to the Hoover Dam due to its ambitious scale. Unlike the 1930s, today’s advanced transmission technology will enable SunZia to transport wind-generated electricity via high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables to Phoenix, facilitating further distribution to markets in Arizona and California. “This is precisely the kind of initiative needed to decarbonize the U.S. and align with climate goals,” says Steve Swift, chief commercial officer at GE Vernova’s Onshore Wind business.

The complexity of coordinating such a massive project cannot be overstated. A significant challenge in renewable energy projects is managing the supply chain, ensuring timely convergence of manufactured parts and materials. To expedite the process, GE Vernova will produce some turbine towers near the project site in Belen, New Mexico, with additional facilities in Pueblo, Colorado, and Amarillo, Texas. The nacelles, housing the turbines’ essential components, will be manufactured in Pensacola, Florida.

Despite the logistical challenges of assembling these turbines in a remote area, the streamlined design of the 3.6-154 turbine simplifies the process. This turbine, while smaller than offshore giants like the 14-MW Haliade-X, offers significant logistical and construction efficiencies. As Kevin Siwik, director of North American sales at GE Vernova Onshore Wind, points out, the region’s existing construction cranes are perfectly suited for these compact turbines, enabling rapid installation and faster returns on investment.

SunZia’s vast expanse of one million acres presents varied topography, requiring precise computer modeling to determine optimal turbine placement. “Engineering a single product to fit diverse locations is challenging,” says Soner Ozkan, senior account manager for Pattern Energy at GE Vernova Onshore Wind. To send renewable electricity efficiently via HVDC, power must be converted to direct current (DC) on-site before reverting to alternating current (AC) in Phoenix.

GE Vernova’s Financial Services and Consulting Services divisions play crucial roles in the project. Customized software enhances turbine efficiency with the HVDC line, and the system is designed to handle power surges within 50 milliseconds, safeguarding equipment. Financial Services also supports the project by securing substantial commitments to monetize future tax credits, offering a comprehensive suite of solutions from modeling to financing.

Sequencing the project is critical to achieving timely completion goals. Establishing road access for construction and maintenance is just one of many tasks, with Pattern Energy working closely with environmental groups to minimize the impact on the healthy rangeland and transmission line route.

This collaboration between Pattern Energy and GE Vernova builds on their successful Western Spirit wind project, now operational, which marked a new era of large-scale installations. The 3.6-154 turbines for SunZia, with rotor diameters of 154 meters, represent the next step in this ongoing partnership.

CS Energy’s Brigalow Peaking Power Plant will utilize GE Vernova’s LM2500XPRESS* aeroderivative turbines, capable of operating on 35% green hydrogen initially, with plans to reach 100% within a decade.

Brisbane, Australia; January 8, 2024 — GE Vernova’s Gas Power division (NYSE: GE) has announced an order from Queensland’s CS Energy for 12 LM2500XPRESS* aeroderivative turbines. These turbines will power the Brigalow Peaking Power Plant in the Western Downs Region, providing up to 400 megawatts (MW) of reliable energy. This plant, the first hydrogen-ready power station in Queensland, is expected to enhance grid stability and support the Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan. It is set to commence commercial operations in 2026.

The Brigalow Peaking Power Plant will initially operate on 35% green hydrogen, with the potential to transition to 100% hydrogen fuel over the next decade. The plant’s fast-start capability allows it to go from cold to full output in just five minutes, making it ideal for supporting periods of high demand and supplementing variable solar and wind power generation. Once operational, the plant will provide electricity equivalent to the average consumption of more than 150,000 Queensland homes during peak times.

Queensland Minister for Energy and Clean Economy Jobs, Mick de Brenni, stated, “The Brigalow Peaking Power Plant exemplifies our commitment to transitioning from fossil fuels to green hydrogen, produced locally from our abundant sun, wind, and water. While Australia’s renewable energy capacity continues to grow, efficient gas turbine technology remains crucial for grid stability. As coal is phased out and renewable generation increases, maintaining grid stability is increasingly challenging.

Mexico City, MEXICO: January 3, 2024 — GE Vernova’s Gas Power division (NYSE: GE) and Iberdrola Mexico have announced the successful commencement of operations at the Topolobampo III power plant in Sinaloa, near the Topolobampo gas pipeline. The facility is the first in Mexico to utilize GE’s H-class combined-cycle technology, specifically the 7HA.01 gas turbines, offering a highly efficient, digitally enhanced power solution. This plant generates up to 766 megawatts (MW), meeting the electricity needs of over 1.6 million average Mexican households.

With Mexico’s population projected to exceed 150 million by 2050, up from the current nearly 127 million, the demand for energy is rapidly increasing. Mexico is a major producer of natural gas, with an 18% increase in output in 2022 compared to 2021. Concurrently, the Mexican government aims to double the nation’s renewable capacity by 2030, significantly boosting solar and wind energy from 15 GW to 40 GW.

This integrated setup allows real-time data usage for stable and efficient operations, enhancing asset visibility, reliability, and availability while minimizing operating and maintenance costs. Local technology partner CERREY supplied the heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs).

Paris, France: December 12, 2023 — GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions division and MYTILINEOS Energy & Metals have been awarded a £1 billion contract by National Grid Electricity Transmission and SP Transmission, part of SP Energy Networks (SPEN), to construct the UK’s first high-capacity east coast subsea link. This milestone project will employ GE Vernova’s advanced High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology.

Project Overview

The consortium will supply and construct two HVDC converter stations for the Eastern Green Link 1 (EGL1) project, a joint venture between National Grid Electricity Transmission and SP Transmission. The EGL1 HVDC link, featuring a 525kV, 2GW bipole Voltage-Sourced Converter (VSC) and HVDC subsea transmission cable, will stretch from Torness in East Lothian, Scotland, to Hawthorn Pit in County Durham, England. This system will transmit renewable energy to over two million UK homes, enhancing the nation’s green energy infrastructure.

Advanced HVDC Technology

GE Vernova, leading the consortium, will provide state-of-the-art engineering and technology for the HVDC converter stations, converting direct current to alternating current for seamless integration into the onshore grid. The HVDC cable, approximately 190km long, will utilize VSC technology, the latest in HVDC advancements, ensuring efficient and reliable long-distance power transmission.

Electrolysis Technology for Green Hydrogen Production

Electrolysis involves splitting water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity. Green hydrogen, produced via this process, emits little to no greenhouse gases and is vital for eFuels and ammonia production. GE Vernova’s integration will provide Next Hydrogen’s electrolyzers with direct current (DC) power from renewable sources such as solar, wind, and hydro. GE Vernova will also supply power quality solutions, including synchronous condensers, energy storage, motors, drives for compression and water, and controls with Energy Management Systems (EMS).

Paris, France: November 16, 2023 — EDF Systèmes Energétiques Insulaires (SEI) has chosen a consortium of GE Vernova’s Power Conversion business and Eiffage Énergie Systèmes to provide and install a state-of-the-art Synchronous Condenser system at the EDF SEI TAC Jarry Sud power plant in Guadeloupe, France.

This advanced solution aims to stabilize the island’s electrical grid, ensuring reliable power supply by addressing sudden fluctuations and disturbances. The Synchronous Condenser leverages Power Conversion’s expertise in rotating machinery, offering a sustainable and efficient alternative that replicates the synchronous inertia response traditionally supplied by thermal power plants.

“This initiative sets a significant benchmark for our Synchronous Condenser technology, developed and manufactured in France. We are proud to support EDF SEI in its mission to decarbonize Guadeloupe’s energy grid,” said Eric Cotelle, General Manager at Power Conversion, France.

The increasing reliance on renewable energy to cut carbon emissions has heightened grid instability and necessitated modernization of power plant infrastructure. In Guadeloupe, renewable energy usage surged from 23% in 2020 to 35% in 2022.

GE Vernova will deliver a 200 MW.s/25 MVA synchronous generator, including all necessary auxiliary equipment and plant control systems. The project also features a 12-year equipment maintenance contract.

Eiffage Énergie Systèmes will handle electrical distribution from the main transformer to the equipment interface, alongside responsibilities for civil engineering, installation, and site management.

Paris, FRANCE — September 19th, 2023 — To address the complexities of the energy transition, German transmission system operator Amprion GmbH has placed an order with GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions business for twelve 400 kV power transformers. These transformers will play a critical role in reinforcing the electrical grid that supplies power to 29 million people under Amprion’s coverage.

The power transformers, totaling over 5,000 MVA, will be manufactured at GE Vernova’s grid facility in Mönchengladbach, western Germany. They are scheduled for delivery between 2025 and 2027, and will be installed at nine substations across Amprion’s extensive grid, which spans from Lower Saxony to the Alps.

“As utilities transition to renewable energy, transmission grid operators face increasing demands and complexities. Modern transmission systems are required to handle bulk power in ways that were not initially anticipated,” said Philippe Piron, President and CEO of GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions business. “We are proud to support Amprion, a valued long-term customer, in strengthening their 400 kV electrical grid. These transformers are essential components of the electrical grid, regulating the flow of electricity from generation plants through transmission and distribution lines to homes and businesses. By replacing transformers from the 1970s with GE Vernova’s state-of-the-art technology, Amprion will be better equipped to integrate more renewable energy into their network.

Since 2003, Amprion has been purchasing GE Vernova’s transformers, switchgear, gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), mechanically switched capacitors with damping network (MSCDN), and related services. This ongoing partnership underscores the reliability and performance of GE Vernova’s products.
