On February 29, 2024, GE Vernova’s Gas Power and Financial Services divisions (NYSE: GE) announced an order from Kindle Energy for six LM2500XPRESS* power packages. These units aim to provide rapid, reliable power to United Power electric cooperative in Colorado, meeting urgent capacity needs with highly modular technology.

The six LM2500XPRESS units will be installed at the Mountain Peak Power (MPP) plant in Keenesburg, Weld County, Colorado. Expected to be operational by 2025, the plant will generate up to 162 megawatts (MW), supporting Colorado’s transition to a more sustainable energy mix. GE Vernova’s Financial Services division also provided co-development funding to accelerate the project’s timeline, ensuring power availability aligns with United Power’s needs.

As Colorado moves away from coal-powered electricity by 2031, with several coal-fired plants either closing or converting to natural gas, the state continues to increase its renewable energy production. According to the “Renewables on the Rise Dashboard,” Colorado’s solar power production has increased sevenfold and wind power has grown by 2.3 times since 2013.

“In a state facing growing power demand and the phasing out of coal plants, it’s crucial to have a blend of flexible and efficient energy sources to meet carbon reduction goals while ensuring power reliability,” said Lee Davis, CEO of Kindle Energy. “We rely on GE Vernova’s technical and financial expertise to help our Mountain Peak Power plant manage the intermittent nature of wind and solar power generation in northeast Colorado. We are excited to collaborate with GE Vernova again, following our work on the Magnolia Power Plant in Louisiana.”

The MPP plant will utilize GE Vernova’s LM2500XPRESS power packages, which can start from cold in as little as five minutes. Each unit includes an LM2500* aeroderivative gas turbine, a distributed control system (DCS), and a Dry Low Emissions (DLE) combustion system, which minimizes emissions without water usage—a key advantage in northeast Colorado.

Illawarra, New South Wales, Australia, February 19, 2024 – GE Vernova’s Gas Power division (NYSE: GE) and EnergyAustralia have announced the opening of the Tallawarra B Power Station, marking a significant milestone as Australia’s first dual-fuel power plant capable of running on both natural gas and green hydrogen.

The Tallawarra B Power Station, utilizing GE Vernova’s 9F.05 gas turbine, is designed to operate on a blend of 5% green hydrogen and natural gas by 2025, contingent on the development of a substantial hydrogen production industry. This makes it the world’s first 9F gas turbine to function on a hydrogen-natural gas mix.

The Tallawarra B facility will provide up to 320 MW of dispatchable power, bolstering the reliability of New South Wales’ energy grid. This development follows the closure of the Liddell coal-fired power plant, and Tallawarra B will help fill the gap left by Liddell’s decommissioning, offering essential flexibility during peak demand periods and reducing emissions with the use of green hydrogen.

“This is the first new gas-fired power station in New South Wales in over a decade. Tallawarra B will play a crucial role in the energy transition, providing flexible and reliable power during peak demand and low supply periods. It supports the integration of more renewables as coal plants retire,” said Mark Collette, Managing Director of EnergyAustralia.

The 9F turbine, a dual-fuel unit, can simultaneously burn two types of fuel. Alongside its gas turbine expertise, GE Vernova is proficient in wind turbines, solar solutions, energy storage, grid systems, and power conversion technologies, all critical for advancing the green hydrogen value chain.

GE Vernova supplied an A78 generator, an exhaust stack with an innovative Plume Dispersion Device, a generator step-up transformer, a Mark* Vie control system, and gas turbine accessories for this project. These components were modularized to simplify and expedite on-site installation and enhance serviceability.

GE Vernova’s gas turbines can currently operate on hydrogen levels ranging from 5% to 100%. With over 450 9F gas turbines ordered since 1991, accumulating over 24 million operational hours across more than 40 countries, GE Vernova is pioneering dry low NOx (DLN) combustor technology for 100% hydrogen fuel, aiming for solutions by 2030.

Regulatory Approval for GE Vernova’s Advanced Nuclear Fuel Production

GE Vernova Cleared for Higher Enrichment Nuclear Fuel Manufacturing

WILMINGTON, North Carolina, February 14, 2024 – GE Vernova’s Global Nuclear Fuel (GNF) division has received authorization from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to produce, transport, and evaluate nuclear fuel with Uranium-235 enrichments of up to 8 weight percent.

“These approvals mark a significant advancement in our long-standing tradition of designing and manufacturing nuclear fuel,” stated Mike Chilton, Executive Vice President of GNF. “We are committed to ongoing innovation to enhance plant efficiency for our customers and to support emerging reactor technologies with adaptable and dependable fuel products as the industry advances toward higher enrichment use.”

With the NRC’s recent approval of GNF’s fuel fabrication license amendment, the Wilmington, NC facility becomes the first commercial site in the U.S. licensed to produce fuel with enrichments up to 8 weight percent. Additionally, the NRC has granted a Certificate of Compliance for GNF to ship fuel bundles with up to 8 weight percent enrichment using their RAJ-II shipping container. Licensing topical reports for advanced nuclear methods have also been approved, allowing GNF to assess fuel with enrichments exceeding 5 weight percent.

These regulatory achievements are partly due to GNF and GE Vernova’s Advanced Research division’s collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Accident Tolerant Fuel (ATF) Program. GNF is advancing fuel technologies that enhance accident tolerance and operational flexibility, while also improving bundle efficiency to sustain economic performance.

Higher enrichment fuels are expected to enhance nuclear fuel cycle economics, including power uprates for existing boiling water reactors, and support the next generation of reactor technologies, such as advanced and small modular reactors.

This partnership allows SaskPower and GEH to work jointly on project planning, facilitating the exchange of expertise in the design, fuel sourcing, and fabrication processes for the BWRX-300 SMR. Additionally, it supports workforce and supply chain planning essential for deploying an SMR in Saskatchewan.

GE Vernova, through its Polish subsidiary GE Power Sp. z.o.o., will lead the consortium, providing crucial technologies like Gas Insulated Switchgear, Transformers, and Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOMs). GE Vernova’s Nuclear Business Secures £33.6 Million Grant for UK SMR Development

WILMINGTON, North Carolina: January 25, 2024 — GE Vernova’s Nuclear business, GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH), proudly announced receiving a £33.6 million grant from the UK Future Nuclear Enabling Fund (FNEF) provided by the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero (DESNZ). This grant supports the UK Government’s goal to achieve 24 GW of nuclear energy by 2050, enhancing the country’s energy security and net-zero ambitions.

“The UK is witnessing its largest nuclear power expansion in 70 years, with small modular reactors at the forefront,” said Andrew Bowie, Minister for Nuclear. “The £33.6 million funding for GE Hitachi will aid in developing their design, positioning us to be one of the first to deploy this transformative technology. This will result in more affordable, cleaner, and secure energy for homes and businesses.”

GEH applied for the FNEF grant with a seasoned UK team, including Jacobs, Laing O’Rourke, Cavendish Nuclear, and Synthos Green Energy (SGE), a Polish investor and developer. GEH is developing a UK supply chain, highlighted by a memorandum of understanding with Sheffield Forgemasters for potential UK-sourced steel forgings to support BWRX-300 SMR deployment.

In tandem with the FNEF grant, GEH will enter the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) process for the BWRX-300. The GDA process enables UK regulators to evaluate the safety, security, and environmental protection standards of new nuclear reactor designs. Jacobs, with extensive experience in UK nuclear power plant projects, will support GEH in the GDA. In October, GEH advanced to the next stage of the Great British Nuclear small modular reactor competition, backed by SGE.

GE Vernova Enhances Kuwait’s Sabiya Power Plant with Major Turbine Upgrades

Kuwait: January 15, 2024 — GE Vernova has successfully completed the modernization of four 9F.03 class gas turbines at Kuwait’s 2 GW Sabiya Combined Cycle Power Plant, marking a significant achievement for the country’s power sector. This upgrade, supported by the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, is part of a broader initiative to modernize Kuwait’s power infrastructure.

These Advanced Gas Path (AGP) upgrades are designed to enhance the power plant’s efficiency and output, increasing block output by up to 6.3% and reducing heat rate by 1.8%. This translates to an additional 70 MW of power without additional fuel consumption or increased carbon emissions, equating to removing approximately 16,000 cars’ worth of emissions from the roads.

The upgrades were conducted under a multiyear service agreement between GE Vernova and Alghanim International, following an Operations & Maintenance (O&M) agreement with the Ministry. The objective is to boost power production, extend maintenance intervals, improve fuel efficiency, and reduce both costs and CO2 emissions per megawatt produced.

GE Vernova provided the AGP upgrades and will maintain the units for the next seven years. This initiative will ensure more reliable and efficient power output, meeting the rising electricity demand, particularly during peak periods.

Previously, GE Vernova upgraded two turbines in Block 1, increasing output by 6%, equivalent to the emissions of 8,000 cars.
