Sheffield, South Yorkshire – March 21, 2024 – GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH), a subsidiary of GE Vernova’s Nuclear business, convened a crucial conference yesterday in Sheffield to explore opportunities for UK businesses in the deployment of the BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR).

Over 150 UK-based companies across the nuclear supply chain – from manufacturing and construction to engineering – participated in the event. Prominent guest speakers included South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard, representatives from the Nuclear Industry Association (NIA), and Synthos Green Energy (SGE) from Poland, a key investor and developer.

A Stepping Stone for UK’s Nuclear Future

The conference, hosted by the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (Nuclear AMRC) in Rotherham, focused on the BWRX-300 technology and its potential contribution to the UK’s ambitious target of 24 GW of new nuclear capacity by 2050. Detailed presentations explored the associated supply chain opportunities, emphasizing the benefits of UK-based manufacturing and innovation.

Collaboration for Success

“The BWRX-300 SMR is ideally suited to meet the UK’s energy security and decarbonization goals,” stated Sean Sexstone, Executive Vice President of Advanced Nuclear at GEH. “Our proven technology already benefits from partnerships in Canada, the US, and Poland. This experience positions BWRX-300 as a low-risk, high-reward option for Great British Nuclear. We’ve assembled a top-tier team to deliver this project in the UK, and we’re eager to collaborate with the talented companies represented here today to build a robust domestic supply chain.”

UK at the Forefront of Innovation

Oliver Coppard, Mayor of South Yorkshire, highlighted the region’s commitment to leading the next energy revolution. “South Yorkshire is well-positioned due to our rich history and our wealth of talent, creativity, and innovation,” he said. “We’re investing heavily in infrastructure, boasting the world’s first Advanced Manufacturing District. Unlocking Potential for the Domestic Supply Chain

Industry-Wide Support for SMR Development

Tom Greatrex, CEO of the Nuclear Industry Association, expressed strong support for SMRs. “SMRs like the BWRX-300 will play a vital role in the UK’s energy security and net zero goals by providing clean, reliable power around the clock. The impressive turnout today showcases the eagerness of the UK supply chain to be part of these exciting nuclear projects. BWRX-300 – A Global Endeavor

The UK government aims to achieve 24 GW of nuclear energy by 2050 to guarantee energy security and net zero goals. GEH recently received a £33.6 million grant from the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero (DESNZ) through the UK Future Nuclear Enabling Fund (FNEF). This funding supports GEH’s entry into the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) process for the BWRX-300.

Global interest in the BWRX-300 is substantial. In Canada, Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has partnered with GEH, AtkinsRéalis, and Aecon Construction Group to deliver the BWRX-300 at the Darlington site. OPG’s experience in nuclear projects, coupled with GEH’s expertise, positions the project for success and potential expansion to other regions.

The Province of Ontario is collaborating with OPG to plan and license three additional BWRX-300 units at Darlington. Furthermore, OPG, Tennessee Valley Authority, Synthos Green Energy, and GEH are co-investing in the BWRX-300 standard design and key component development.
