TOKYO, JAPAN – ATLANTA, GA (March 18, 2026) – IHI Corporation (IHI) and GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) announced the successful completion of a test involving 100% ammonia combustion in GE Vernova’s F-class gas turbines. The emission performance achieved aligns with their long-term development strategy aimed at delivering a fully ammonia-fueled gas turbine, with commercial deployment targeted by 2030.
“An important part of the ammonia value chain is now being realized,” said Noriaki Ozawa, Managing Executive Officer and President of the Resource, Energy & Environment Business Area at IHI. “Since entering into our joint development agreement in 2024, collaboration between our teams has accelerated significantly, and we are now seeing tangible results. Achieving full-scale ammonia combustion in an F-class gas turbine represents a key milestone and supports our customers’ decarbonization strategies in the power sector.”
The test was carried out at a специально designed IHI facility, built to replicate the real operating environment of GE Vernova’s F-class turbines.

Ammonia is already widely used in industrial sectors, particularly in fertilizer production. As a hydrogen carrier, it offers a more efficient and cost-effective solution for transportation and storage. Additionally, ammonia is expected to play a growing role in power generation as a carbon-free fuel. Because it contains no carbon, its combustion does not directly produce CO₂, making it a promising option for reducing emissions in the energy sector. (Note: even when using carbon-free fuels, trace CO₂ emissions may occur due to the presence of carbon dioxide in ambient air.)
