Baku, Azerbaijan (November 20, 2024) – During COP 29, GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) announced plans to deploy its LM6000* gas turbine, incorporated within the LM6000VELOX* packaged solution, at the Whyalla Hydrogen Power Plant in Upper Spencer Gulf, South Australia. Four LM6000VELOX units, ordered by ATCO Australia, are expected to commence operations in early 2026. This project will be the first commercial-scale deployment of GE Vernova’s aeroderivative gas turbine technology powered entirely by 100% hydrogen.

Leveraging Renewable Hydrogen for Zero CO₂ Emissions

This pioneering gas turbine solution will use renewable hydrogen produced on-site at Whyalla to eliminate CO₂ emissions** during combustion. The facility will house one of the largest hydrogen production and storage plants globally, converting South Australia’s surplus renewable energy from wind and solar farms into stored hydrogen to power the LM6000VELOX units.

Enhancing Grid Stability in South Australia

The Whyalla Hydrogen Power Plant will act as a flexible power source, stabilizing the electricity grid by utilizing excess renewable energy. Capable of delivering up to 200 MW, the plant will ensure consistent electricity supply even when renewable sources are unavailable or insufficient to meet demand.

During a signing ceremony at COP 29, Ramesh Singaram, President and CEO of Asia, Gas Power, GE Vernova, joined The Hon Peter Malinauskas, Premier of South Australia, and John Ivulich, CEO and Country Chair of ATCO Australia, to celebrate the collaboration.
