  • GE Vernova® has been awarded a contract by Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) to provide nine 150 megawatt (MW) pumped-storage units for the 1.35 GW Upper Sileru hydropower project in India.
  • Upon completion, the facility is projected to generate electricity sufficient to meet the annual demand of approximately three million households nationwide.
  • This marks the second collaboration between GE Vernova and MEIL on a pumped-storage initiative in India.

VADODARA, INDIA (May 4, 2026) GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) has announced a new contract with Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) to supply nine 150 MW pumped-storage units for the 1.35 GW Upper Sileru hydropower plant in Andhra Pradesh, India. The project is scheduled for completion by 2030. With a total capacity of 1.35 GW, Upper Sileru will rank among India’s largest pumped-storage hydropower installations.

Once operational, MEIL’s Upper Sileru facility will offer large-scale energy storage, capable of supplying electricity equivalent to the yearly consumption of around three million Indian homes*. This pumped-storage project is set to play a vital role in India’s clean energy shift by delivering long-duration storage to support the integration of expanding solar and wind power into the national grid. Thanks to its rapid mode-switching between energy generation and storage, the plant will enhance grid stability, manage peak load demands, and provide large-scale frequency regulation.

Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Limited stated: “The Upper Sileru pumped-storage initiative represents a major milestone in India’s energy transformation. By partnering again with GE Vernova, we are utilizing proven pumped-storage technology to deliver dependable, large-capacity energy storage that strengthens grid resilience and accelerates renewable energy adoption across the nation.”

GE Vernova’s responsibilities include the complete design, engineering, manufacturing, testing, supply, logistics, and on-site supervision of installation, commissioning, and testing for all nine units, along with control and governing systems. The nine vertical Francis reversible turbines are engineered for high efficiency, operational adaptability, and extended durability, ensuring consistent performance over decades of service.

This project follows a previous collaboration between GE Vernova and Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Limited (MEIL). GE Vernova is currently supplying four 125 MW fixed-speed pumped-storage units for the Kundah hydropower plant in India.

The Upper Sileru project will utilize GE Vernova’s established engineering and manufacturing infrastructure in India, contributing to local job creation, workforce upskilling, and industrial growth during the project lifecycle.

Frederic Ribieras, Hydro Power CEO at GE Vernova, commented: “We are proud to partner with MEIL on our second project together. Pumped-storage hydropower is essential for building a sustainable energy future in India and globally, offering large-scale grid stabilization and balancing intermittent renewable sources over extended periods.”

Pumped Storage Projects

Pumped storage serves as a major form of large-scale energy storage, functioning like a massive battery to support grid stability and the integration of solar and wind energy in a sustainable manner. GE Vernova is a leading global provider in this sector, with nearly 30% of the world’s installed pumped-storage capacity. The company is currently advancing more than 3 GW of pumped-storage projects globally. Recently, GE Vernova delivered four 250 MW variable-speed pumped-storage systems for the Tehri pumped-storage hydropower plant, part of the Tehri Hydropower Complex operated by THDC India Limited.
