At the forum, GE Vernova demonstrated how intelligent digital systems are accelerating the clean energy shift. In Tunisia, national power provider STEG explored the potential of GE Vernova’s CERius™—a next-generation digital solution that leverages artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, and digital twin capabilities to build a comprehensive emissions management framework. Transitioning from traditional hardware-based monitoring to a software-centric digital model allows STEG to access real-time, verifiable emissions data, essential for compliance with global benchmarks such as the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

Testing at the Sousse B power plant validated the success of this digital transformation. Not only did it deliver consistent emissions tracking, but STEG expects the shift to software-driven operations to cut associated capital and maintenance expenses by as much as 50%. Improved data transparency strengthens Tunisia’s strategy to export electricity to Europe, illustrating how intelligent decarbonisation can act as a catalyst for broader regional economic development.

Alongside digital advancements, GE Vernova stressed that as Africa advances its clean energy transition, the emphasis must evolve from simply increasing power capacity to ensuring grid infrastructure is inherently robust and adaptive. To support this shift, the company launched a new whitepaper at the event titled “Spain’s 2025 Blackout Experience: Grid Firming Needs for Developing Power Systems with High-Renewable Penetration.”

The report underscores that future power grids must be designed for resilience, not just energy transmission. To scale renewables effectively, African nations are urged to prioritize grid stability from the outset, drawing insights from Spain’s recent grid challenges. By incorporating flexible grid-forming technologies—such as aeroderivative gas turbines, synchronous condensers, and advanced power electronics—and properly compensating for grid-support services, Africa can bypass outdated infrastructure models. This strategy fosters the creation of a more dependable and sustainable energy network capable of sustaining long-term industrial expansion.
