GE Vernova expands its GridOS® software portfolio with the first grid-specific data fabric to aid utilities in effectively managing the electric grid across transmission, distribution, and edge segments, solving electrification challenges through enhanced data orchestration.

Cambridge, Massachusetts; February 21, 2024 – GE Vernova has launched GridOS® Data Fabric, a pioneering data fabric designed to enhance grid orchestration. This new software aims to assist utilities in managing a more intelligent and resilient grid as renewable energy sources increase and extreme weather events become more frequent.

Today’s grid is increasingly complex, with dispersed energy data contributing to the challenge of effective management. GridOS® Data Fabric addresses this by using federation to access decentralized data from various sources and virtualization to create a unified view across the entire grid ecosystem, including IT and OT applications. This consolidated view enables grid operators to efficiently govern and utilize vast amounts of distributed data, making informed decisions in real-time.

Modernizing the grid with sensors and smart meters allows utilities to gather significant data to boost grid intelligence. They also need to process external data sources, such as weather and emergency services information. GridOS® Data Fabric integrates this data to facilitate coordinated decision-making.

Itron, a leader in energy, water, smart city, and IIoT services, will utilize GE Vernova’s GridOS® Data Fabric to integrate grid operations and edge data from sources like residential solar and EVs. “GridOS® Data Fabric’s ability to connect and integrate data for accurate real-time decisions promotes grid stability and supports AI and ML applications for automating grid operations,” said Don Reeves, Senior Vice President, Outcomes at Itron.

GE Vernova’s GridOS® strategy focuses on a modular, data-driven software portfolio to orchestrate a sustainable energy grid, helping utilities navigate the energy transition. This announcement precedes DISTRIBUTECH International, where GE Vernova will showcase its grid hardware and software solutions, designed to tackle big data, climate change, and energy security challenges to accelerate the energy transition.
