GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions, in partnership with TECO Electric and Machinery Co., has marked a significant milestone with the groundbreaking ceremony for the ZhangGong Step-up Substation and the YongXing Switchyard in central Taiwan’s Changhua County. These crucial infrastructural developments, owned by Taiwan Power Company, will be equipped with two units of GE Vernova’s cutting-edge ±200 Mvar STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator) systems, a result of a deal closed between GE Vernova and TECO earlier this year.

The collaboration between GE Vernova and TECO aims to fortify Taiwan’s power grid by leveraging advanced STATCOM technology. The deployment of these STATCOM systems at the substations, interconnected via a 161 kV transmission line, is poised to facilitate the seamless integration of renewable energy sources into the region’s power network, while simultaneously bolstering grid stability.

Changhua County, renowned for its diverse renewable energy projects including solar, wind, and hydro power, stands to benefit greatly from this initiative. As Taiwan increasingly embraces renewable energy, STATCOM systems are expected to play a pivotal role in maintaining the stability and reliability of the power grid.

Mr. Pin Chang, President of TECO’s Intelligence Energy Business Group, expressed confidence in the collaboration, stating, “Through its collaboration with GE Vernova, TECO can enhance Taiwan’s renewable power grid and ensure a more stable electricity supply.”

Shailesh Mishra, Regional Leader for GE Vernova’s Grid System Integration business in Asia Pacific, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the significance of the project in advancing Taiwan’s renewable energy goals. He remarked, “We are honored to contribute to Taiwan’s renewable energy goals through the deployment of our advanced STATCOM technology. This collaboration with TECO underscores our commitment to sustainable energy solutions that drive positive change on a global scale.”

STATCOM technology plays a vital role in stabilizing power grids, particularly in regions with a significant reliance on renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. By regulating voltage and reactive power, STATCOM systems ensure the grid’s reliability and efficiency, mitigating voltage fluctuations and enhancing overall grid performance.
