GE Vernova and Systems With Intelligence (SWI) Forge Partnership to Enhance Electrical Grid Asset Monitoring

Today at the CIGRE event in Paris, GE Vernova and Systems With Intelligence (SWI) formalized their partnership through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at advancing substation monitoring solutions. This collaboration will harness technologies such as gas sensing, bushing monitoring, and infrared thermography, integrated with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to elevate diagnostics and asset management for utility companies and transmission system operators (TSOs).

The initial result of this collaboration will be the integration of SWI’s infrared sensors into GE Vernova’s DGA 900 Plus system, with commercial availability anticipated in early 2025.

Furthermore, SWI’s Pan/Tilt substation-level sensors will be incorporated into GE Vernova’s GridBeats™ Asset Vision, a comprehensive substation monitoring solution that combines various sensing methods to enhance diagnostic capabilities while simplifying the overall complexity of the solutions.

PARIS, France (August 27, 2024) – The collaboration between GE Vernova and SWI is set to revolutionize substation monitoring. The partnership seeks to blend cutting-edge technologies such as gas sensing, bushing monitoring, and infrared thermography, enhanced by AI and ML, to optimize grid asset management. By integrating SWI’s innovative infrared thermography and touchless monitoring systems with GE Vernova’s expertise in grid diagnostics, the companies aim to create a more efficient approach to monitoring electrical assets.

The primary focus of this alliance will be on substation monitoring, combining both companies’ leading technologies to provide integrated monitoring and diagnostic intelligence. This initiative is designed to streamline operations for utilities and TSOs, enabling quicker issue detection and contributing to a more reliable and efficient power grid.

“Asset managers today are inundated with data from various sensing devices provided by different vendors, resulting in fragmented data silos and the need for multiple software tools to manage and analyze this data independently,” stated Graham McGuigan, Product Line Leader for Monitoring & Diagnostics at GE Vernova. “Our collaboration with SWI aims to consolidate these data streams into a more cohesive and intelligent monitoring system.”

The first concrete outcome from this collaboration will be the integration of SWI’s fixed infrared sensors into GE Vernova’s DGA 900 Plus, an advanced multi-gas monitoring system for transformers. This system is designed to monitor transformer health by detecting early warning signs of issues, thus preventing potential failures and ensuring a stable and efficient power supply. This enhanced solution is expected to be commercially available in early 2025, allowing asset managers to seamlessly incorporate infrared thermography into the DGA 900 Plus platform, which already includes features for dissolved gas analysis, bushing monitoring, and predictive modeling.

Looking forward, GE Vernova and SWI plan to broaden their collaboration to include the integration of SWI’s pan/tilt infrared sensors within the GridBeats™ Asset Vision substation monitoring solution, further enhancing capabilities in electrical grid asset management. GridBeats™ represents GE Vernova’s portfolio of software-defined automation solutions aimed at digitizing the grid.
