TOKYO, Japan (April 3, 2025) – GE Vernova’s Onshore Wind division confirmed today that the Abukuma wind facility has commenced power generation following the achievement of its Commercial Operation Date (COD). The 147 MW installation incorporates 46 3.2 MW–103m* onshore wind turbines.
Developed by Fukushima Fukko Furyoku, LLC, a coalition of nine firms under the leadership of Sumitomo Corporation, the Abukuma project represents a strategic partnership focused on reconstructing the Abukuma region through sustainable energy development. This collaboration integrates GE Vernova’s cutting-edge technology with Toshiba Corporation’s proven implementation expertise, demonstrating effective international cooperation in advancing Japan’s renewable energy infrastructure.
Positioned in the Abukuma region, this landmark installation stands as Japan’s most substantial onshore wind energy facility. Capable of generating sufficient electricity to serve approximately 120,000 Japanese households, the project serves as a cornerstone for Fukushima’s post-2011 revitalization strategy, fostering economic revival and enhancing energy security through clean power generation.
