LONDON (April 11, 2025) — The nuclear division of GE Vernova, known as GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH), has officially delivered its final bid to Great British Nuclear (GBN) as part of the ongoing selection process for small modular reactor (SMR) technologies.
Developed as a tenth-generation model, the BWRX-300 incorporates decades of operational expertise from boiling water reactor systems, utilizing standardized blueprints, an established deployment framework, and GEH’s history of international regulatory cooperation.
Collaborating with Ontario Power Generation (OPG), GEH is advancing construction of the inaugural BWRX-300 unit—the first SMR in the G7 nations—at OPG’s Darlington facility near Toronto. Initial groundwork at the site has already concluded. While the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has granted a construction permit for the project, provincial authorities must still approve commencement of building activities.

Recent strategic partnerships have been established through Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between GEH and UK-based firms Boccard and Cavendish Nuclear, alongside international collaborators Aecon, Amentum, AtkinsRéalis, and Laing O’Rourke. These agreements expand on a supply chain summit hosted by GEH in Sheffield last year, which attracted participation from over 150 British enterprises.
In January 2024, GEH secured a £33.6 million allocation from the Future Nuclear Enabling Fund (FNEF) administered by the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero (DESNZ). This funding initiated the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) process for the BWRX-300.
With a longstanding presence in the UK, GE Vernova operates four production facilities across the nation, powering over 30 percent of the country’s electricity generation through its technological infrastructure.
