GE Vernova’s HA-powered Goi Thermal Power Station adds 2.3 GW of electricity to contribute to the stable supply of electricity in Japan

Tokyo, Japan – (April 17, 2025) – GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) has announced the commercial launch of Goi Thermal Power Station’s third block in Chiba Prefecture, part of the Greater Tokyo Area. Developed by the joint venture Goi United Generation (GIUG), which combines Japan’s largest power producer JERA, ENEOS Power, and Kyushu Electric Power, the plant utilizes three GE Vernova 9HA.02 gas turbines—the first deployment of this technology in Japan. The facility will inject 2.3+ gigawatts (GW) into the national grid, enhancing Japan’s energy reliability and security.

Beyond the gas turbines, GE Vernova supplied three Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs) for the project. These HRSGs incorporated Pressure Part Modules manufactured at GE Vernova’s Changwon, South Korea facility, with each unit assembled as three prefabricated Supermodules in Tongyeong, South Korea, before ocean transport to Japan. In combined cycle configurations, HRSGs capture waste heat from gas turbine exhaust to produce steam, driving turbines to generate up to 50% additional electricity without extra fuel consumption.

The modernization of a facility originally built in the 1960s and decommissioned in 2018 integrates GE Vernova’s HA technology with Toshiba’s steam turbines and generators. This upgrade is projected to cut CO2 emissions by an estimated 16% compared to the previous plant.

“This milestone signifies the completion of constructing one of Japan’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled facilities, capable of supplying electricity equivalent to 2.2% of Japanese households,” stated Goi United Generation CEO Mr. Sato. “Delivering dependable power while reducing carbon footprints remains a priority. GE Vernova’s HA turbines deliver exceptional efficiency and output, supporting Japan’s goals to lower emissions per unit of energy produced.”

GE Vernova and Toshiba collaborated to install the world’s largest HRSG Supermodules at Goi, overcoming complex logistics to transport the components from South Korea. Each Supermodule—weighing 2,500 metric tons and standing 43-46 meters tall, comparable to a 15-story building—required tailored solutions to address spatial constraints. The partnership ensured successful delivery and assembly despite these challenges.
