GE Vernova Nuclear Partners with Worley Chemetics to Develop Key Component for BWRX-300 Small Modular Reactor

WILMINGTON, North Carolina (October 31, 2024) — GE Vernova’s Nuclear division, in collaboration with GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH), has announced its selection of Canada-based Worley Chemetics. This partnership involves leveraging Worley Chemetics’ fabrication facility in Pickering, Ontario, to design and produce the isolation condenser system for the BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR), which will be the first grid-scale SMR in North America.

“The isolation condenser system is a vital passive safety feature of the BWRX-300 design, and we are excited to collaborate with Worley Chemetics on a manufacturing solution that upholds the highest standards of safety, quality, and performance,” stated Sean Sexstone, Executive Vice President of Advanced Nuclear at GEH. “This partnership aims to enhance Ontario’s nuclear supply chain and stimulate economic growth in the area.”

Andrew Barr, President of Worley Chemetics, shared, “We’re thrilled to partner with GE Hitachi in addressing the challenges of the energy transition while advancing nuclear solutions in Canada. This collaboration builds upon Worley Chemetics’ 60-year history of delivering sustainable process technologies, along with our newly acquired ASME nuclear certification and the recent expansion of our specialized alloy fabrication capabilities in Ontario.”

Additionally, it was announced that Worley Chemetics has been added to the BWRX-300 qualified supplier network. This network was created to ensure a reliable, cost-efficient, and innovative process for the BWRX-300’s production and commercialization. Suppliers that meet established criteria, fulfill customer requirements, and demonstrate a commitment to investing in BWRX-300 supply chain capabilities are eligible for inclusion. Worley Chemetics joins BWXT Canada Ltd. in the group, with more members expected to be announced soon. GE Vernova’s extensive global presence and partnerships position it to lead in SMR supply chain development.

Ontario Power Generation (OPG), GEH, AtkinsRéalis, and Aecon Construction Group have signed a contract to construct the inaugural BWRX-300 at OPG’s Darlington site. Preliminary site preparation is complete, with construction anticipated to begin in 2025 and commercial operation slated for late 2029. A total of four 300 MW units are planned for Darlington. OPG’s extensive operational expertise, combined with its proven record of completing nuclear refurbishments on time and within budget, along with GEH’s nuclear proficiency, sets a promising foundation for replicating this model in other regions.

The BWRX-300 plays a crucial role in GE Vernova’s commitment to energy transition. In addition to aiding customers in achieving decarbonization goals, the BWRX-300 is designed to lower construction and operational costs. This reactor leverages a unique blend of existing fuel, plant simplifications, reliable components, and a design based on an NRC-certified reactor blueprint.
