(May 08, 2025) – GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GVH) revealed today that provincial authorities in Ontario and Ontario Power Generation (OPG) have granted official authorization to advance with installation of the Western Hemisphere’s inaugural small modular reactor (SMR) at Darlington’s nuclear facility in Ontario, Canada. This development constitutes a critical advancement in nuclear technology innovation and solidifies GVH’s role as a pioneer in commercial SMR deployment.
The Canadian decision holds major implications for nations evaluating SMR implementation globally. The BWRX-300 leverages an established design framework and proven construction methodology, providing concrete solutions for governments aiming to strengthen energy independence, lower carbon output, and satisfy growing electricity requirements. Countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Poland and Sweden are actively investigating SMR technologies such as the BWRX-300 to address their energy challenges.
