ABB has revealed plans to allocate over CA$130 million (equivalent to roughly US$100 million) toward enhancing research and development and production capabilities for advanced power protection and grid resilience solutions in Canada. This strategic Montreal-based expansion in Quebec will consolidate ABB’s existing Iberville and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu sites into a single modern facility. The initiative aims to address growing market demands across utilities, renewable energy, transportation, and residential and infrastructure development sectors nationwide.

The upcoming 340,000 sq. ft. integrated manufacturing and R&D center will offer 33 percent more space than the combined footprint of the current facilities. It will feature state-of-the-art production automation and digital integration systems. By merging ABB’s Iberville and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu operations, the relocation will centralize more than 600 employees spanning manufacturing, engineering, testing, and support roles. Additional employment opportunities are projected as new product lines and increased production capacity come online.

This expansion aligns with our recent North American and European investments, reinforcing our global growth trajectory.”

Anticipated to begin operations in mid-2027, the facility will be established in Montreal’s South Shore district. The design incorporates high-efficiency electrical systems and heating technologies expected to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions by over 95 percent compared to the existing sites.

The project will receive CA$16 million (US$12 million) in funding support from Investissement Québec.

Currently, ABB Installation Products sources or assembles over 80 percent of its Canadian offerings domestically, utilizing 70 percent locally procured materials—including 100 percent Canadian steel and aluminum.

This represents ABB’s largest Canadian investment to date. Over the past decade, the company has directed approximately US$275 million toward advancing manufacturing standards, technological innovation, and workforce development across its Canadian operations. These efforts have included facility modernizations, implementation of advanced automation systems, and enhancements to local production capabilities.
