ABB Strengthens Power Technology Alliance with Applied Digital to Support AI-Ready Data Centers

ABB has extended its collaboration with Applied Digital, a developer and operator of high-performance data centers, to deliver critical power infrastructure for the company’s second AI factory campus in Harwood, North Dakota. This strategic alliance is advancing a new medium voltage electrical framework designed to meet the escalating energy demands of artificial intelligence (AI) applications. Following the initial agreement, this second project was secured during the fourth quarter of 2025. Specific financial terms of the partnership remain confidential.

Applied Digital’s Polaris Forge 2 facility in North Dakota features a 300 MW capacity distributed across two facilities, with phased deployment planned for 2026 and 2027. The campus is engineered for future scalability. Through this initiative, ABB will implement low and medium voltage electrical systems, positioning the site as one of the world’s most sophisticated AI factory campuses with exceptional energy efficiency and an anticipated best-in-class low PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness).

“Our collaboration with ABB underscores Applied Digital’s dedication to redefining data center scale and performance benchmarks,” stated Todd Gale, Chief Development Officer at Applied Digital. “Polaris Forge 2 marks the next phase of our AI factory evolution – starting with two 150-megawatt facilities designed for seamless expansion – reinforcing our leadership in delivering high-performance, energy-efficient AI infrastructure.”

Early collaboration enabled both teams to optimize efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness while accelerating deployment timelines.”

Applied Digital recently disclosed that the first 200 MW phase of Polaris Forge 2 will be occupied by a US-based Hyperscaler. The original partnership was unveiled in June 2025, facilitating the design of Applied Digital’s initial 400 MW AI campus, Polaris Forge 1, in Ellendale, North Dakota. Both locations utilize ABB’s HiPerGuard medium voltage Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) technology and advanced medium voltage switchgear. Transitioning power architecture from low to medium voltage using HiPerGuard enhances power density and energy efficiency. It also enables scalable 25 MW modules, minimizing cabling complexity and boosting system reliability.
