  • Extension Pack framework allows clients to integrate new functionalities progressively without altering core software
  • Includes browser-based Operations Client offering a no-installation interface for managing process operations within ABB Ability™ System 800xA® distributed control system
  • Supports ABB’s Automation Extended initiative, merging established control reliability with forward-looking digital advancements

Expanding upon the latest iteration of its advanced distributed control system (DCS) ABB Ability™ System 800xA® 7.0, ABB has introduced a novel modular delivery approach through Extension Packs. The initial release (xP0) incorporates a browser-based Operations Client, enabling operators and automation specialists to securely access, oversee, analyze and manage industrial processes using HTML5 web technology.

Extension Packs represent a segmented software deployment strategy that lets users retain their foundational software while selectively implementing new features without operational interruptions. By separating innovation cycles from core system updates, this method reduces the frequency of comprehensive upgrade initiatives, lowers risk exposure and lifecycle expenses, safeguards prior engineering investments, and empowers users to implement digital enhancements at their preferred pace.

Offered as an optional enhancement for ABB Ability™ System 800xA® version 7 platforms, the first Extension Pack delivers an updated user interface featuring simplified navigation, adaptable multi-window displays, and complete compatibility with existing operator graphics. Essential operational metrics, including alarms, events, and trend data, are consolidated within a centralized interface, enhancing team productivity, situational awareness, and operational effectiveness.

Engineered for both legacy system modernization and new automation deployments, the no-installation client can be implemented without modifying the System 800xA base control system software.

This initial Extension Pack also introduces a new infrastructure server node hosting ABB’s Core Control Operating System (CC OS), marking a pivotal achievement in ABB’s Automation Extended initiative. This infrastructure establishes the groundwork for seamless orchestration of containerized control and digital applications, reinforcing ABB’s vision for a more adaptable and modular automation ecosystem. Announced in February 2026, Automation Extended outlines ABB’s strategic direction for enabling industrial innovation with continuity through a contemporary, open, and modular automation framework.

Based on a “separation of concerns” architecture derived from NAMUR Open Architecture (NOA) principles, Automation Extended differentiates between a secure control environment handling mission-critical process functions and a digital environment focused on monitoring, optimization, and advanced applications. This methodology permits incremental adoption of technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and advanced analytics without jeopardizing the stability or availability of core plant operations.

“Industrial operators must modernize while maintaining operational stability and availability,” stated Stefan Basenach, Senior Vice President, Process Automation Technology, ABB. “With the first Extension Pack for the latest System 800xA release, ABB is introducing a novel approach to functionality deployment in active systems. Both new and existing automation clients can now implement modern web-based operations and digital capabilities without disrupting established control environments or compromising reliability. Through Extension Packs and Automation Extended, ABB is transforming innovation delivery in mission-critical automation settings.”
