ABB has secured a contract to modernize the automation and control infrastructure on the Buzzard offshore platform, situated roughly 100 km northeast of Aberdeen within one of the UK’s most significant North Sea oil fields. This project for CNOOC Petroleum Europe Limited, a division of global energy leader CNOOC International, will support ongoing safe and dependable operations of the Buzzard offshore facility.
ABB will implement a focused upgrade of its deployed ABB Ability™ System 800xA® distributed control system and Safeguard 400 safety solution. The staged modernization approach enables critical updates to be integrated while maintaining platform functionality, minimizing downtime and lowering project risks.
ABB’s Aberdeen-based engineering team will oversee the project, leveraging an onshore reference system for testing and validation. By validating upgrades in a controlled environment prior to offshore deployment, ABB can mitigate risks, reduce disturbances, and ensure uninterrupted production continuity.
