The ABB Baldor-Reliance® SP4™ shaft-grounded HVAC motor has earned the highest recognition in the Automation, Controls and Motion Systems division of the Plant Engineering 2026 Product of the Year Awards. This distinguished honor celebrates products that demonstrate engineering innovation and meaningful industry influence.

SP4 HVAC motors provide a dependable, economical answer to bearing degradation from harmful shaft currents in variable frequency drive systems. By embedding a shaft-grounding mechanism within the motor housing, SP4 efficiently channels electrical discharges away from critical components to enhance equipment lifespan and minimize unexpected maintenance.

“This achievement underscores our dedication to creating engineering solutions that deliver measurable benefits to our clients,” stated Bevan Christiansen, ABB’s global air handling segment director. “SP4 HVAC motors merge advanced protection features with exceptional efficiency and dependability.”

Enhanced performance and energy efficiency

Engineered specifically for variable frequency drive applications, SP4 shaft-grounded HVAC motors provide superior defense against electrical discharge damage, prolonging equipment longevity and minimizing expensive service interruptions. Versatile configurations enable seamless integration for HVAC and refrigeration systems, pumping equipment, and general industrial variable frequency drive applications. SP4 HVAC motors are available in enclosed variants suitable for indoor/outdoor environments with moderate particulate and moisture exposure, as well as open designs optimized for cleaner indoor settings.

Based on ABB’s proven SP4 architecture, these motors achieve NEMA Premium 4 efficiency matching IEC IE4-equivalent standards in a rolled steel frame without requiring magnets or rare earth components. This efficiency level can reduce energy losses by up to 40 percent compared to standard NEMA-efficient motors, resulting in significant cost reductions over the equipment’s service life.

Multifunctional applications

Available in general purpose, severe duty, pump and HVAC variants, the complete SP4 series expands on ABB’s established AC induction motor technology with a range of durable models engineered for diverse operational requirements. The concept is straightforward: Enhance the proven AC induction design by reducing motor losses by an average of 20 percent while preserving the simplicity, dimensions, and functionality of existing AC induction motor installations.

The concept is straightforward: Improve the proven AC induction design by reducing motor losses by an average of 20% while preserving the simplicity of current AC induction motor installations.
The concept is straightforward: Improve the proven AC induction design by reducing motor losses by an average of 20% while preserving the simplicity of current AC induction motor installations.

All SP4 motors incorporate a thermal management system that extends insulation durability – every 10°C reduction in operating temperature doubles insulation lifespan, resulting in prolonged bearing performance and extended equipment longevity. This benefit is supported by a market-leading 48-month warranty.
