U.S. Department of Energy allocates $400 million to support deployment of first commercial SMR in the country

WILMINGTON, North Carolina (December 2, 2025) – The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced $400 million in funding for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to advance the deployment of the BWRX-300 small modular reactor developed by GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GVH). The first unit is planned for the Clinch River site, with commercial operation targeted for the early 2030s, potentially making it the first operational commercial SMR in the United States.

“The BWRX-300 is currently the only SMR technology under construction in the Western world, and this funding will help speed up its deployment in the U.S.,” said Scott Strazik, CEO of GE Vernova. “We commend the DOE for its leadership in supporting the nuclear sector and promoting public-private partnerships that are essential for advancing next-generation nuclear technologies and strengthening national energy security.”

TVA led a consortium of utilities and industry partners, including GE Vernova Hitachi, in applying for funding under the DOE’s Generation III+ SMR program. The breadth of this coalition reflects strong industry confidence in the BWRX-300 and highlights the importance of accelerating its deployment to reinforce the U.S. nuclear supply chain.

Earlier this year, TVA submitted a construction permit application to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the development of the first BWRX-300 reactor at the Clinch River site in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The application is currently under review.
