GE Vernova Advances Hydrogen Combustion Technology for Decarbonizing Industrial Gas Turbines

GE Vernova, a global leader in combustion innovation, is driving efforts to lower carbon emissions in its B- and E-Class gas turbine portfolio by advancing hydrogen combustion solutions.

The company has validated its Dry Low NOx (DLN) combustor technology, capable of operating on natural gas, hydrogen blends, and even 100% hydrogen. During tests at the Global Technology Center in Greenville, SC, emissions remained below 25 ppm NOx. GE Vernova targets commercial availability of the 100% hydrogen DLN solution for both new and existing B- and E-Class gas turbines by 2026.

Commitment to Decarbonization

With over 120 turbines already running on hydrogen-containing fuels and generating 530 TWh across 8.5 million hours of operation, GE Vernova reinforces its dedication to reducing carbon footprints. “This advancement represents a significant step towards decarbonizing our industrial gas turbine fleet,” said Jeremee Wetherby, Carbon Solutions leader at GE Vernova.

Engineering Breakthroughs in Hydrogen Combustion

Hydrogen’s unique properties, including a flame speed nearly eight times faster than natural gas, present engineering challenges like flashback risk. GE Vernova’s tests showcased stable operation of the DLN technology across a variety of fuel combinations, from pure natural gas to 100% hydrogen. Additionally, noise levels remained low, even during hydrogen-only operation, ensuring reliable performance for industrial clients who depend on gas turbines for uninterrupted power.

Innovative Micromixer Design

A pivotal element of this breakthrough is the micromixer-based fuel-air premixer, a technology under development since 2005 in collaboration with the US Department of Energy. Already integrated into GE Vernova’s H-Class turbines, recent advancements have enhanced its hydrogen capabilities. A full-scale 6B DLN combustor prototype was rigorously tested under real-world conditions, proving the system’s readiness for deployment.

Advantages Over Existing Systems

Compared to current combustors, which require diluents like water to reduce emissions, the new H₂ DLN technology offers numerous benefits:

  • Eliminated need for diluents
  • 4–7% improvement in combined cycle heat rate
  • Enhanced availability and extended maintenance intervals
  • Reduced NOx emissions

Future-Ready Hydrogen Solutions

Jeremee Wetherby concluded, “This successful validation demonstrates our commitment to providing B- and E-Class turbine operators with flexible fuel options, from natural gas to hydrogen blends, without relying on diluents for emissions control.”

With an installed base of approximately 2,800 B- and E-Class turbines worldwide, GE Vernova continues to lead the industry in cleaner, more efficient power solutions.
