Streamlining Inspections with ABB’s Digital Technology

Helsinki University Hospital transitioned to ABB’s cloud-based monitoring system in under an hour, eliminating the need for labor-intensive physical transformer inspections.

Jari-Pekka Korhonen, Operations Manager at the hospital, shares: “We manage both dry and oil transformers, requiring regular monitoring. Previously, inspecting oil transformers necessitated a full shutdown to collect samples—a significant challenge in a hospital conducting 87,000 surgeries annually, with numerous patients relying on life-support systems.”

Korhonen adds, “Our facility spans a vast area, and my team cannot be everywhere at once. Remote monitoring was essential.”

Introducing ABB Ability™ Asset Manager for Transformers

Treating 700,000 patients annually and employing 27,500 professionals, HUS consumes energy comparable to a small town. “We now receive uninterrupted, real-time transformer data, which wasn’t possible through visual inspections alone,” Korhonen explains. “Previously, inspections could only identify obvious issues like leaks or temperature changes. Now, we monitor transformers 24/7 and address problems immediately.”
