Innovative Carbon Capture Technologies Proposed to Optimize Cost Efficiency

The assessment of carbon capture technologies suggested that the integration of an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system could result in over 7% reduction in total costs associated with carbon capture facilities. Additionally, the EGR system could save approximately 6% in annual operational expenses for carbon capture, based on the specific site conditions evaluated in the study.

Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia (November 4, 2024) – GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV), in collaboration with Saudi Arabia’s Ash Sharqiyah Operations & Maintenance Company (ASHOMCo), has finalized three FEED studies aimed at assessing the potential for reducing net carbon emissions at three cogeneration plants. These facilities, powered by GE Vernova’s advanced 7E and 7F gas turbines, deliver up to 920 Megawatts (MW) of combined power and produce 1,400 tons per hour of steam—sufficient to power an average of 920,000 Saudi homes.

Hydrogen Readiness and Carbon Capture for a Cleaner Future

GE Vernova conducted thorough assessments to improve the performance and cost-efficiency of potential Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Sequestration (CCUS) systems at these facilities. The 7E and 7F gas turbines are already capable of operating with hydrogen blends, and with certain modifications to the standard combustors, they can accommodate up to 100% hydrogen.

The FEED studies determined that blending up to 32% hydrogen with natural gas at these plants is feasible, with recommendations for adjustments to the existing combustion systems to reach this target. Additionally, the studies evaluated retrofitting options to capture up to 95% of the plants’ carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions.

Optimizing Carbon Capture with Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)

The studies concluded that implementing GE Vernova’s EGR system could decrease the total costs of installing a carbon capture system by over 7% compared to traditional methods. Moreover, it could reduce the operational expenses of carbon capture by 6% annually under the site-specific conditions analyzed.
