TOKYO, JAPAN (October 8, 2024) — GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) announced the receipt of an order for three GE Vernova 7HA.03 gas turbines, which are slated for installation at Kansai Electric Power Company’s Nanko power station in Osaka, Japan. These cutting-edge turbines will replace existing, aging LNG-based power generation equipment (comprising three boilers and three steam turbines) and are expected to boost operational efficiency while lowering carbon dioxide emissions.
Japan has committed to ambitious net-zero goals by 2050, as outlined in its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). According to GE Vernova’s recently published “2024 Japan Energy Outlook” White Paper, the nation’s energy system is undergoing significant change. The government has focused on achieving decarbonization through increased investment in low-carbon energy sources and adherence to “Economic Efficiency,” one of the three pillars in the revised 6th Strategic Energy Plan (also featuring “Safety plus Energy Security” and “Environmental Sustainability”).
“The plant is expected to deliver up to 1.8 gigawatts (GW) of electricity to the grid and rank among the most efficient facilities in Japan,” stated Ramesh Singaram, President and CEO of GE Vernova’s Gas Power, Asia. “Moreover, the 7HA.03 gas turbine technology can currently combust up to 50% hydrogen mixed with natural gas, with a roadmap toward 100% hydrogen usage over the next decade. We’re excited to introduce this innovative technology to Kansai Electric, a long-term partner of ours built on mutual respect and trust, helping rejuvenate Japan’s power sector with more efficient, sustainable solutions that align with the nation’s energy goals.”
In addition to delivering the turbines, GE Vernova will provide field services for their maintenance.
As a pivotal player in Japan’s energy transition, GE Vernova has supported the country’s power generation needs for over 130 years. Today, the company provides more than 50% of Japan’s heavy-duty gas power capacity, while also addressing growing demands for renewable and nuclear energy.
