Berlin, Germany (July 18, 2024) – GE Vernova’s Electrification division (NYSE) has officially entered into a strategic R&D partnership with four major German Transmission System Operators (TSOs).
The collaboration with TenneT TSO GmbH, 50Hertz Transmission GmbH, Amprion GmbH, and Transnet BW GmbH focuses on the design and development of a Multi-Terminal/Multi-Hub High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) solution. This partnership represents a significant early achievement in creating a future-ready high-voltage grid, crucial for Germany and Europe’s energy transition.

HVDC technology is the most efficient method for transmitting large volumes of power over long distances, playing a key role in incorporating renewable energy like wind and solar into the grid. Currently, HVDC systems, utilizing Voltage Sourced Converter (VSC) technology, operate as point-to-point, bi-directional transmission systems with an HVDC converter station at each end. The collaboration between GE Vernova and the German TSOs aims to develop a next-generation multi-terminal HVDC system, enabling multiple terminals to interconnect and forming a highly efficient electrical grid.
The R&D agreement also includes the creation of a new 525 kV Direct Current Circuit Breaker (DCCB), a first-of-its-kind technology that will allow TSOs to isolate and manage faults within the HVDC system. GE Vernova is currently in the development stage of the DCCB, which, once completed, will be included in their market offerings.
The initial phase of the R&D project is set to last 18 months, concluding in December 2025, with implementation beginning in 2026 and commercial deployment anticipated by 2029. The project will be spearheaded by GE Grid GmbH in Berlin, with engineering efforts based at GE Vernova’s HVDC facility in Stafford, UK.
This agreement underscores GE Vernova’s commitment to delivering innovative solutions that meet the evolving needs of the electrical grid.
