ABB Smart Power’s facility in Garbagnate Monastero, Italy, has proudly earned a Gold certification for Zero Waste to Landfill. This prestigious recognition was independently validated by UL Solutions under the UL 2799 Environmental Claim Validation Procedure (ECVP) for Zero Waste to Landfill. In 2023, the site, which specializes in producing enclosures for low-voltage power distribution systems, successfully diverted 99% of its waste from landfills.

Chiara Della Ducata, Environmental Project Handler at UL Solutions, remarked: “ABB’s dedication to circularity principles necessitates transparent and independent validation of its sustainability initiatives. Achieving Zero Waste to Landfill involves a thorough and responsible approach to managing material production, consumption, and disposal. Through UL Solutions’ independent validation program, ABB has demonstrated a forward-thinking and responsible method for waste management.”

The Garbagnate Monastero facility is now part of a growing network of ABB sites validated by UL Solutions for their commitment to zero waste practices. As a Center of Excellence for enclosure development and manufacturing, Garbagnate Monastero’s innovative processes will serve as a model for other ABB Smart Power facilities worldwide.

Alessandro Rovardi, ABB Smart Power Hub Europe Manager, stated: “From product design to production and packaging, we are reimagining our processes and collaborating with all partners to ensure our work generates value. This Gold certification from UL Solutions is an external testament to ABB’s commitment. Each day, we are advancing closer to our ultimate goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.”

With a team of over 130 employees, the site produces more than 50,000 enclosure columns annually. They recycle 19 different types of materials and are continually striving to eliminate waste destined for energy recovery or landfill.

Giorgio Parente, Enclosure Manufacturing Unit Manager at ABB Smart Power, emphasized: “This remarkable accomplishment is a direct result of our team’s environmental dedication. Every team member actively contributes to our sustainability efforts, driving innovation and improvement. Together, we are enhancing our site’s energy efficiency, reducing CO₂e emissions, and minimizing our environmental footprint.”

ABB’s 2030 sustainability strategy extends beyond enabling a low-carbon society through critical energy transition technologies. The company is committed to embedding sustainable practices across its value chain, product lifecycles, and site operations, ensuring energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact at every step.
