Neopak Renews Collaboration with ABB to Modernize Rosslyn Mill

Neopak, a prominent containerboard and paper products manufacturer, is extending its partnership with global technology leader ABB to enhance the automation systems at its Rosslyn Paper Mill in Pretoria, South Africa. Producing various paper grades, including high-performance recycled liner, fluting, paper bags, core board, and plasterboard, the mill supports essential industries such as construction, packaging, and converting.

Upgrade to ABB Ability™ System 800xA for Enhanced Efficiency

ABB will deploy its state-of-the-art ABB Ability™ System 800xA distributed control system (DCS) for Paper Machine 3 (PM3). The existing infrastructure, which includes an ABB Quality Control System (QCS), an earlier ABB DCS, and variable speed drives, will be modernized to incorporate advanced technologies and digital integrations. This upgrade aims to optimize efficiency, productivity, and quality through smart manufacturing.

Transforming a 15-Year-Old Machine with Advanced Controls

Operational since its construction in 2007–2009, PM3 has achieved annual production of around 85,000 tons, following recent process adjustments. ABB’s modernization efforts are expected to significantly improve production efficiency and product quality, enabling Neopak to meet growing market demands while adhering to high standards of quality and sustainability.
