• Achieving a 37% boost in energy efficiency and cutting 101.5 tCO2e since 2019

The dedication to sustainability, combined with data-driven decisions and smart technology, has been pivotal to the success of ABB Smart Power’s Mission to Zero™ initiative in Västerås, Sweden. Since 2019, the Västerås campus, now officially recognized as an ABB Mission to Zero™ site, has managed to decrease Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 101.5 tCO2e. This reduction is comparable to the yearly emissions of 22 gasoline-powered vehicles.

By embracing renewable energy and smart building technologies, and leveraging data-driven insights, the Västerås team has improved energy efficiency by 37%. The facility is now fully powered by electricity sourced from renewable energy.

Mission to Zero™ is ABB’s strategic initiative focused on reducing emissions and enhancing energy efficiency across its global sites as part of its broader commitment to achieving net zero. Teams involved in Mission to Zero are empowered to lead sustainability efforts, encouraging innovation and collaboration to drive change while also helping customers achieve similar goals.

The Västerås facility serves as a global center of excellence for research, development, and manufacturing within ABB Smart Power, specializing in products like contactors, soft starters, pilot devices, machine safety solutions, and arc guard systems. Each year, over 1 million of these products are produced at the site, contributing to making electricity safer, more efficient, and more reliable.

On-site renewable energy generation is supported by 584 solar panels, which cover 7% of the facility’s total energy needs. Integration with the local district heating system, which is more efficient than centralized heating, further contributes to energy savings, particularly during Sweden’s cold winters. Additionally, smart energy solutions such as automated HVAC systems and motion-sensor LED lighting have been installed throughout the facility.

Ongoing investments in automation and digitalization have resulted in consistent improvements in both productivity and energy efficiency. The site now consumes 37% (1,898 MWh) less energy compared to 2019.

Ideas for sustainability improvements often originate from the shopfloor: since 2022, an employee-driven sustainability group has generated numerous successful initiatives, including the introduction of e-bikes for employees, investments in energy-efficient compressors, and the reprogramming and replacement of ventilation fans to use only 20% of their original energy. The site also boasts a fully electric vehicle fleet, with 18 EV charging stations available for employees, customers, and visitors.
