ABB to Implement Advanced Process Controls at Bath Cement Plant in Kingston, Ontario
Lafarge Canada, a key player in sustainable construction and part of the Holcim Group, has selected ABB to modernize the process control system at its Bath Cement Plant in Kingston, Ontario. This initiative represents a pivotal step in Lafarge’s journey to reduce carbon emissions. ABB will provide its ABB Ability™ System 800xA® distributed control system (DCS), enhancing operational efficiency and empowering plant operators with better control of low-carbon cement production. The Bath facility, which produces over one million tons of Lafarge’s OneCem® annually, is at the forefront of advancing sustainable construction across Canada.
Situated along Lake Ontario, the Bath Cement Plant has been a cornerstone of Canadian construction since 1973. Lafarge has recently intensified its sustainability efforts, including transitioning to low-carbon fuels and upgrading to energy-efficient kiln technology. The plant is also piloting a groundbreaking carbon capture process, aligning with Lafarge’s ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
“Sustainability in Action:”
Andrew Stewart, VP of Cement at Lafarge Canada, emphasized the company’s commitment: “At Lafarge Canada, sustainable construction is our priority. Upgrading our process controls with ABB, transitioning to low-carbon fuels, and enhancing kiln efficiency are all part of reducing our carbon footprint. Our pilot project with Hyperion, which captures and sequesters CO₂, is a vital milestone towards net-zero emissions. These efforts not only improve operational efficiency but also ensure we deliver high-quality, sustainable products to our customers.”
