Today, ABB announced the acquisition of Lumin, a leading U.S.-based pioneer in responsive energy management systems, expanding ABB’s capabilities in the North American residential energy management sector. This move follows ABB’s strategic minority investment in Lumin in 2023. Financial details of the transaction remain undisclosed.

The integration brings Lumin’s intelligent solutions for electrification, solar, and storage systems into ABB’s portfolio, forming a comprehensive energy management offering for residential properties in North America. Lumin’s innovative technology positions ABB to meet the increasing demand for home electrification solutions in the U.S. With approximately 48 million existing homes¹ needing electrification upgrades, this demand is set to rise significantly with new constructions and in other North American markets.

Its versatile platform facilitates the seamless integration of load centers, battery systems, and generators from any brand. This acquisition aligns with ABB’s growth strategy in the North American residential market, where electrification and renewable energy trends are driving demand. By incorporating Lumin’s hardware and cloud-based software capabilities, including a homeowner and installer mobile app, ABB can offer smarter, safer, and more sustainable home energy solutions.

Electricity accounts for a significant portion of residential energy consumption in North America, making up 44% in the U.S.² and nearly 46% in Canada³ʹ⁴. In the years ahead, this share is expected to increase, with U.S. residential electricity consumption projected to rise by 14% to 22% between 2022 and 2050⁵. These trends present an excellent opportunity for ABB’s newly acquired solutions to make all-electric homes more affordable for builders and assist homeowners in maximizing their energy efficiency.
