ABB Enhances Baldor-Reliance SP4 Technology with Severe-Duty Enclosures for Improved Efficiency

ABB has expanded its Baldor-Reliance® SP4 motor™ line to include severe-duty enclosures, further boosting motor efficiency by up to 20%. The latest addition is a cast-iron, totally enclosed fan cooled (TEFC) motor designed for hazardous environments, offering certifications for Division 2, Class I Groups A, B, C, D, and Class II Groups F and G. With an IP55 rating, this motor is built to withstand dust and water spray, making it ideal for harsh conditions. This marks the second phase of ABB’s SP4 technology launch, following the earlier release of rolled steel open drip proof and TEFC motors.

The SP4 series is based on ABB’s reliable AC induction motor technology and is tailored for a wide range of severe-duty applications, including pumps, fans, compressors, and conveyors. The new cast-iron models offer power ranges from 25 to 300 horsepower, complementing the previously launched rolled steel models, which range from ¼ to 20 horsepower.

Over 80% of industrial electric motors operate direct-on-line (DOL), and as a standalone unit, the SP4 achieves NEMA Super Premium (IE4) efficiency. Efficiency is further enhanced when paired with an ABB variable speed drive, resulting in cooler operation, reduced heat-related energy losses, and extended motor life. This leads to lower energy consumption, decreased operating costs, and a reduced total cost of ownership.

The SP4 motors are available in 2, 4, or 6-pole configurations, making them suitable replacements for existing units and providing immediate efficiency upgrades. Each motor comes with a 48-month warranty and is designed to seamlessly replace existing NEMA motors in both direct-start and variable speed operations.

These motors comply with current U.S. Department of Energy efficiency standards and the forthcoming Medium Electric Motor (MEM) regulations, which will take effect on June 1, 2027. These regulations will require motors up to 100 horsepower to meet NEMA Premium efficiency and motors between 100 and 250 horsepower to achieve NEMA Super Premium efficiency.
