ABB has joined forces with Stadler US to propel sustainable rail transport across the United States. Under this collaboration, ABB will provide state-of-the-art traction converters and Pro Series Traction Batteries for the next-generation trainsets of Metra and Caltrans in Illinois and California, respectively. This initiative marks a significant step towards eco-friendly rail solutions in the US.

Metra, a pioneer in battery-powered rail operations in the US, placed an order for eight two-car trainsets in June 2024. These new trainsets, designed to operate throughout Chicago, will be equipped with Pro 8C batteries and CC750 DC traction converters. ABB’s cutting-edge traction technology enhances efficiency and reliability, helping to significantly cut CO₂ emissions in Metra’s operations.

Meanwhile, Caltrans has entered into a groundbreaking agreement with Stadler US to introduce hydrogen-powered passenger trains in North America. The project includes a fleet of 10 trainsets, each fitted with Pro 8C traction batteries, CC750 DC traction converters, and CC400 DC traction converters. ABB’s traction system is crucial for fuel cell integration, ensuring optimal propulsion efficiency and minimizing power consumption and emissions.

Final assembly and testing for these advanced components will take place at ABB’s Traction factory in Mechanicsville, Virginia, where nearly 100 skilled production workers contribute to the manufacturing process.

Since 2010, ABB has invested over $14 billion in expanding its US operations, enhancing facilities, and advancing technology.

“Our partnership with Stadler demonstrates our unwavering commitment to sustainable transportation,” said Edgar Keller, President of ABB’s Traction division. “By leveraging our cutting-edge technology and local manufacturing expertise, we are accelerating the shift towards cleaner rail solutions.”

“The integration of ABB’s traction batteries and converters into our trainsets significantly boosts efficiency and reliability while paving the way for a more advanced transit system,” noted Martin Ritter, CEO Division North America, Stadler. “This collaboration highlights our dedication to delivering next-generation mobility solutions that will benefit communities nationwide.”
