ABB and Blykalla Unite to Advance Small Modular Reactor Technology in Sweden

A Step Toward Fossil-Free Energy

ABB has partnered with Swedish nuclear energy company Blykalla to push the boundaries of small modular reactor (SMR) technology. The two companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop advanced nuclear reactors, which will support Sweden’s clean energy transition and its decarbonization targets.

As part of this collaboration, an electrical SMR pilot facility will be constructed near Oskarshamn, about 340 km south of Stockholm. This pilot, centered around Blykalla’s SEALER-E electric lead-cooled reactor, will serve as a proof of concept for potential expansion to future nuclear power plants.

ABB’s Role in Pioneering Innovation

Under the MoU, ABB will contribute its automation, electrification, and digitalization solutions, along with cyber security frameworks, to ensure compliance with nuclear safety regulations. ABB’s extensive expertise in power distribution, system integration, and control technologies will provide the foundation for the successful deployment of this next-generation nuclear technology.

SMRs: A Key to Sweden’s Energy Future

Small modular reactors, as highlighted by the International Energy Agency (IEA), offer distinct advantages over traditional nuclear plants. These include lower capital costs, enhanced safety, deployment flexibility, and the potential to repurpose sites of retired fossil fuel plants. With existing infrastructure like transmission systems, cooling water, and skilled labor, SMRs are uniquely positioned to accelerate the global transition to renewable energy.

In Sweden, nuclear power already accounts for approximately 30% of electricity generation. The Swedish government’s roadmap, announced in November 2023, aims to expand nuclear energy capacity significantly. By 2035, Sweden plans to add capacity equivalent to two large-scale reactors (2,500 MW), and by 2045, it envisions up to 10,000 MW, including SMRs. This expansion will underpin the country’s ambition for a fully fossil-free electricity system.
