  • ABB’s SensyMaster flowmeter now provides validated thermal mass flow measurement for chemicals, oil & gas, power & utilities, and industrial gas sectors
  • Device supports integration into automated Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), a core component of process automation frameworks
  • Thermal mass flow measurement was historically omitted from SIS designs due to absence of functional safety certification

ABB’s SensyMaster FMT400 flowmeter has secured SIL 2 certification for deployment in safety-critical process environments, enabling thermal mass flow measurement across chemicals, oil & gas, power & utilities, and industrial gas sectors. The certification was granted by TÜV SÜD following the IEC 61508-2 international functional safety standard.

With SIL 2 certification, SensyMaster can now be seamlessly integrated into automated Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), a core component of process automation architecture. Historically, thermal mass flow measurement was excluded from SIS designs due to missing functional safety certification.

Rather than quantifying the actual gas volume, SensyMaster assesses the cooling effect on a heated sensor as gas passes through. Utilizing established gas flow measurement technology, SensyMaster delivers direct mass flow measurement for natural and industrial gases, combined with continuous self-diagnostic checks featuring fault identification. For gas flow measurement, plant operators require sensors that not only ensure precision but also identify failures well before triggering safety incidents affecting plant operations.

“Stricter regulatory demands are driving process plants to require SIL-rated instrumentation across all critical loops,” stated Gerrit Weppner, Global Product Manager at ABB’s Measurement & Analytics division. “Securing SIL 2 certification for SensyMaster underscores our dedication to providing safe, reliable instrumentation for industries where functional safety compliance is essential. Process engineers can now integrate thermal mass flow measurement directly into safety loops, supported by third-party verified failure data.”
