  • European investments aim to boost manufacturing output of medium-voltage systems for electricity distribution
  • Key projects feature a $100 million Italian facility and upgrades in Bulgaria, Finland, Germany, Norway, and Poland
  • Program enhances production of SF₆-free medium-voltage switchgear and grid automation solutions for international markets

ABB has revealed plans to allocate approximately $200 million toward enhancing medium-voltage manufacturing infrastructure across Europe over the coming three years. The initiative focuses on expanding production capabilities, advancing next-generation power distribution technologies, and reinforcing supply chain reliability for clients modernizing electrical systems. This includes energy providers, industrial sectors, and rapidly expanding data center industries.

Strengthening European production infrastructure

The funding bolsters the company’s capacity to deliver essential medium-voltage switchgear and grid automation solutions. This includes a newly established $100 million facility in Dalmine, Italy, designed to meet increasing demand for air-insulated and SF₆-free switchgear and circuit breakers. An additional $100 million will support capacity expansion across manufacturing sites in Bulgaria (Rakovski), Finland (Vaasa), Germany (Ratingen), Norway (Skien), and Poland (Przasnysz), enhancing production of technologies such as gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), vacuum interrupters, and relays to improve power distribution reliability.

This initiative extends recent investments in ABB’s UK and Hungarian operations. In Kecskemét, Hungary, a $15 million allocation has expanded R&D and production capabilities for connector systems, improving medium-voltage network performance and broadening ABB’s grid resilience portfolio for utility and renewable energy clients.

In Nottingham, UK, ABB committed approximately $35 million to scale production of grounding and lightning protection systems designed to safeguard critical infrastructure, data centers, and transportation and communication networks against electrical surges and lightning damage.

Collectively, these initiatives demonstrate ABB’s commitment to developing robust manufacturing infrastructure for technologies that ensure grid connectivity and protection in evolving energy landscapes.
