ABB has announced plans to invest approximately $75 million in India by 2026 to substantially expand its manufacturing infrastructure and research and development (R&D) capacities. This strategic investment, following the $35 million allocation in 2025, reinforces ABB’s commitment to its “local-for-local” operational model in India, where about 85% of products and solutions are currently manufactured domestically.

The funding will drive growth across ABB’s Electrification, Motion, and Automation divisions. This follows ten consecutive years of robust annual growth in India, where cumulative investments exceeding $230 million have solidified the country’s status as a global manufacturing center. This year commemorates ABB’s 76th consecutive year of operations in the Indian market.

“This strategic investment in India plays a crucial role in our approach to facilitate infrastructure development and growth in one of our most dynamic markets,” stated Morten Wierod, ABB’s Chief Executive Officer. “We are experiencing heightened demand driven by national energy transformation initiatives, grid modernization projects, data center expansion, and rapid metro and high-speed rail development. Our upgraded facilities will enable us to meet this growing demand while strengthening our regional service capabilities.”

Strengthening Indian Operations

Investments across ABB’s Electrification, Motion, and Automation divisions in multiple Indian locations will prioritize production expansion to support energy transition initiatives and economically vital sectors including data centers and public infrastructure. The initiatives are projected to create approximately 300 new high-skill positions in engineering, operations, and research.

Bengaluru: Nelamangala 1 and 2

ABB is committing $14 million to enhance its Nelamangala campus facilities to sustain growth and intensify localization efforts. Building on previous upgrades, the company is expanding production at Campus 1 and preparing to introduce new technology lines in 2026, featuring advanced electrical protection and enclosure solutions. A key focus involves scaling the converter manufacturing facility, which will be instrumental in supporting India’s expanding sustainable mobility sector. Over the next three to five years, ABB plans to significantly broaden its offerings for high-speed rail and metro transportation, strengthening capabilities in propulsion systems, converters, traction motors, and related services.

The newly constructed Nelamangala Campus 2 will address increasing power protection demands through a tenfold production increase for uninterruptable power supply solutions and dedicated R&D. It will also host advanced rectifier manufacturing, excitation and blending systems, and an integrated gas analyzer systems facility, serving multiple industries and reinforcing regional power and process infrastructure.

Bengaluru: Peenya

ABB is allocating $21 million to upgrade its Peenya operations to expand manufacturing capacity and enhance advanced technology capabilities. Key initiatives include expanding low-voltage drives production and specialized motors such as flameproof (Ex) motors, roller-table motors, and large smoke-venting motors. The company is also advancing its services and digital capabilities through an innovation lab, remote monitoring and diagnostics systems, and upgraded training facilities. Additionally, ABB is modernizing its high-precision electromagnetic flowmeter calibration rig to support greater localization and advanced equipment manufacturing in India.

Hyderabad

ABB is advancing a multi-phase laboratory and office project in Hyderabad, investing $12 million in 2026 for phase one, which includes relocating operations in February 2026 to a leased 12,400+ sqm office and lab space. Phase two involves constructing a state-of-the-art High Power lab on ABB-owned 16,630 sqm land, scheduled for completion in 2026. This facility will accommodate R&D and engineering personnel.

Nashik

In Nashik, ABB is expanding its existing facility with a $22 million investment for producing indoor and outdoor circuit breakers. The upgraded facility will include an expanded Vacuum Interrupter (VI) factory. The expansion will advance localization of 33kV Primary Gas Insulated Switchgear and new SF6-free technologies by 2028.

Vadodara

ABB will invest $6 million to expand its Vadodara manufacturing site, focusing on scaling up its slow-speed synchronous generators facility and increasing induction motors production capacity to meet growing demand from core industries such as metals, oil & gas, cement, and wind energy. The company will also enhance its services workshop, improve facilities, and establish a training center.

ABB’s India revenue exceeded $1.5 billion in 2025, representing ~4% of the ABB Group’s global revenue. With over 10,000 employees across India, ABB operates in five locations with nearly 25 manufacturing, distribution, and operational facilities alongside five major R&D centers.
