ABB has joined forces with Boliden, a leader in mining and smelting based in Sweden, to incorporate Boliden’s Low-Carbon Zinc into ABB’s low-voltage power distribution systems. This zinc boasts a carbon footprint 75% lower than traditional alternatives, contributing to greener electrical infrastructure.

The Role of Low-Carbon Zinc in a Circular Economy

Zinc, vital for galvanizing steel, protects structures from corrosion for up to a century, significantly extending their usability. Boliden, in collaboration with ABB, employs renewable energy in its operations to minimize CO₂ emissions to just 1.0 kg per kilogram of zinc, compared to the industry norm of 3.6 kg.

Boliden utilizes ABB’s power distribution systems, coated with its Low-Carbon Zinc, across its facilities, including mines where zinc ore is extracted. This integration highlights the companies’ shared commitment to sustainability and efficiency.

ABB is advancing its Circularity Approach, aiming to incorporate sustainable materials into 80% of its products and solutions by 2030. Its Kabeldon power distribution cabinets, designed for outdoor use, are now galvanized with Low-Carbon Zinc and available in low-carbon steel. These cabinets carry a Type III Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) verified by third parties, ensuring transparency and reduced environmental footprints for power infrastructure.
