In a strategic partnership with ArcelorMittal, ABB has begun using XCarb® steel in its Kabeldon power distribution systems. This steel, characterized by its high recycled content and reliance on renewable energy sources, significantly decreases the carbon emissions associated with ABB’s key electrification equipment by nearly 29%.

Thanks to the use of XCarb® steel, the carbon footprint of Kabeldon production has been reduced by 60kg CO₂e—a 29% decrease. This low-carbon steel is an integral component of ABB’s sustainability strategy, with a focus on expanding its role within ABB Smart Power’s product portfolio over the next two years. Additionally, ABB has set a goal to ensure that 80% of its products and solutions align with its Circularity Approach by 2030.

Kabeldon, designed for outdoor applications, offers reliable, weather-resistant power distribution, making it a favorite in the utilities sector. It’s now widely implemented in electric vehicle charging systems and renewable energy installations. Already certified with a Type III Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), verified by an independent body, the Kabeldon cabinet with XCarb® will soon receive its own EPD, providing transparency on its environmental impacts across its lifecycle. ABB is committed to ensuring its EPDs are verified by third-party operators.
Low-carbon steel is vital for the shift towards more sustainable sourcing of raw materials—one of the key performance indicators in ABB’s Circularity Approach. The successful integration of XCarb® steel directly supports ABB’s pledge to have 80% of its products and systems meet circularity requirements by 2030.
At Enlit 2024 in Milan, Italy, ABB Electrification will unveil its Kabeldon cabinet featuring XCarb® steel, which is both recycled and produced using renewable energy.
