• ABB has marked a significant step in its sustainability journey by introducing its first Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certified instrumentation product. The PGS300 Gauge Pressure Transmitter is now officially recognized for its environmental impact across its entire lifecycle, from resource extraction to end-of-life.
• The EPD provides a comprehensive assessment of the product’s environmental performance based on a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). This declaration allows customers to compare the sustainability of different products and understand their environmental impact more effectively.
• The PGS300, which measures liquid, gas, and steam pressure, is crucial for maintaining safety and efficiency in industries such as chemicals, oil & gas, and hydrogen. This certification reflects ABB’s ongoing commitment to circularity and sustainable practices.

“This achievement represents a major milestone in our journey towards circularity,” stated Amina Hamidi, Managing Director of BL Instrumentation at ABB Measurement & Analytics. “For the first time, we have validated and tested the environmental performance of our instrumentation products against stringent regulations. Utilizing credible data allows our customers to better understand and compare the environmental footprint of products in the market.”

To secure the EPD certification, an independent assessor conducted a thorough audit of ABB’s manufacturing facility in Ossuccio, Italy, where the PGS300 is produced. The assessor also reviewed documentation from ABB’s five Assembly-To-Order sites worldwide, ensuring comprehensive evaluation.

EPDs are based on Product Category Rules (PCRs) that apply to specific product categories. While awaiting sensor-specific PCRs, ABB has obtained a “Pre-certified EPD” through EPD International. The company will also contribute to developing a Complementary PCR (c-PCR) for the “Industrial Sensor” segment, which will adapt the existing PCR for electric and electronic equipment to better suit measurement technologies.

The introduction of EPDs is a key element of ABB’s Circularity Roadmap, which outlines products that adhere to ABB’s Circularity framework. With EPD certification, these products are now better positioned to meet market demands for transparency in circularity performance.
