Accra, Ghana (November 21, 2024) – Ghana achieved a significant milestone in energy infrastructure on November 19, 2024, with the commissioning of the Bridge Power Project. This state-of-the-art facility underscores Ghana’s dedication to expanding its energy capacity while optimizing fuel efficiency and reducing environmental impact. Located in the Kpone Heavy Industrial Area, the project includes plans to develop a power plant with a capacity of up to 515 MW and an investment of $1.2 billion.
The Bridge Power Project is expected to supply over 7% of Ghana’s dependable thermal power, meeting growing energy demands from residential and industrial sectors.
Innovative Combined Cycle Technology
The plant’s innovative configuration integrates GE Vernova’s trailer-mounted aeroderivative gas turbines, a steam turbine, and a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG). This system generates up to 40% more electricity from the same fuel compared to conventional single-cycle plants. By converting waste heat into energy, the plant enhances fuel efficiency while significantly reducing carbon emissions, marking a pivotal step toward sustainable energy solutions.
A Global First for Aeroderivative Technology
The Bridge Power Station features five TM₂₅₀₀* aeroderivative gas turbines paired with a steam turbine in a groundbreaking combined cycle setup—the first of its kind worldwide. This configuration enables up to 200 MW of natural gas-powered electricity, establishing it as one of Ghana’s most adaptable power plants.
Project Ownership and Development
The project is spearheaded by Endeavor Energy, a leading U.S.-based independent power producer focused on Africa, and Andaris Energy Limited, a wholly Ghanaian energy investment company. Since its founding in 2013, Endeavor Energy has worked with governments in West Africa to advance Just Energy Transition initiatives. The sponsors have collectively invested $1.2 billion in Ghana’s energy sector, including the 200 MW Amandi TCE Power Plant in Takoradi.
Phased Implementation
Under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), supported by a Put Call Option Agreement (PCOA) with the Ghanaian Government, the project will deliver power in two stages:
GE Vernova’s role extends beyond equipment supply to a 25-year service agreement and implementation of its cloud-based Asset Performance Management (APM) software. Leveraging predictive analytics, APM optimizes plant efficiency and supports Ghana’s energy security goals.
