GE Vernova launches Vietnam’s first 9HA gas power plant into commercial operation

DONG NAI PROVINCE, Vietnam (January 5, 2026) – GE Vernova (NYSE: GEV) announced the start of commercial operations at PetroVietnam Power Corporation (PV Power)’s Nhon Trach 3&4 power plant, a 1.6-gigawatt combined cycle facility located in Ong Keo Industrial Park in Dai Phuoc commune, approximately 70 kilometers southeast of Ho Chi Minh City.

Constructed by Samsung C&T and Lilama, the Nhon Trach 3&4 facility is the first in Vietnam to utilize HA-class gas turbine technology and the first to operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG).

According to the updated version of Vietnam’s National Power Development Plan VIII, LNG will remain a key component of the country’s future energy mix, with more than 22 GW of capacity expected by 2030, representing approximately 9.5–12.3% of total installed capacity.

The Nhon Trach 3&4 plant is expected to play a vital role in addressing increasing electricity demand in southern Vietnam while contributing to national sustainability targets.

This project supports the expansion of gas-fired generation and accelerates the transition away from coal. GE Vernova’s H-class gas turbine technology, powered by high-efficiency natural gas, can reduce carbon emissions by approximately 60% compared to coal-fired plants of similar capacity. In addition, the plant enhances grid stability, enabling greater integration of renewable energy sources.

“Vietnam’s energy transition requires a balance of capacity, efficiency, and sustainability, which is why we selected GE Vernova’s 9HA.02 turbines for this project,” a PV Power representative said. “This advanced technology enables the plant to achieve more than 63% combined cycle efficiency, placing it among the most efficient facilities globally. It also meets strict emissions standards and offers fuel flexibility — operating on LNG today, supporting up to 50% hydrogen co-firing, and enabling a future transition to 100% hydrogen, in line with Vietnam’s net-zero ambitions.”

For the project, GE Vernova supplied two power blocks of more than 800 MW each. These include a 9HA.02 gas turbine — the company’s most efficient 50 Hz unit — an STF-D650 steam turbine, a W88 generator, and a Once Through Heat Recovery Steam Generator (OT HRSG), which enhances combined cycle performance. Additionally, GE Vernova provided its Mark VIe Distributed Control System (DCS), improving operational visibility, reliability, and efficiency while reducing maintenance costs.

We are proud to deliver the country’s first HA-class project in alignment with its long-term energy strategy.”

GE Vernova’s technologies currently contribute up to 30% of Vietnam’s electricity generation, supported by more than 1,100 employees across 13 locations nationwide. The company’s global service network includes local capabilities such as the Phu My repair facility and the Dung Quat HRSG manufacturing plant, where key components for this project were produced domestically.
