A new hybrid-electric ocean sampling catamaran, designed for the Orange County Sanitation District (OC San) in Southern California, will feature ABB’s advanced hybrid-electric propulsion technology. This cutting-edge system enables the vessel to comply with the California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) annual equivalence requirements for Zero-Emission Capable Hybrid Vessels, supporting sustainable marine operations.

Supporting Environmental Stewardship in Ocean Monitoring

The vessel, set for delivery in 2027, will bolster OC San’s Ocean Monitoring Program, which has ensured safe water quality for over 40 years. This program plays a critical role in confirming that the region’s waters remain safe for swimming, fishing, and marine life, benefiting 2.6 million residents in the county. Operating approximately 90 days annually, the program contributes to wastewater management, including collection, treatment, disposal, and recycling services.

Technical Highlights and Collaborative Expertise

The 19.2-meter (63-foot) catamaran is being built by All American Marine, leveraging ABB’s extensive expertise in hybrid-electric vessel engineering, system integration, and technology supply. ABB’s propulsion system aligns with OC San’s commitment to environmental sustainability, ensuring that at least 30% of the vessel’s annual power is sourced from zero-emission technologies, as mandated by CARB.

“This project underscores OC San’s dedication to public health and environmental protection,” said Ron Wille, President & COO of All American Marine. “We’re proud to collaborate with ABB, whose hybrid-electric propulsion system will enhance the vessel’s efficiency, safety, and energy optimization.”

Decarbonizing Maritime Operations

ABB’s involvement in this project reflects its broader mission to support the decarbonization of maritime industries. Drew Orvieto, Head of Sales for Marine Systems, US at ABB Marine & Ports, commented: “We’re excited to partner with All American Marine on this ocean sampling vessel. Our hybrid-electric technology is perfectly suited for environmental monitoring and research vessels, helping operators worldwide transition toward more sustainable operations.”
